Whipped Shea Butter

22 Jan

This recipe is great if you are out of beeswax. Shea Butter is naturally rich in Vitamins A, E, and F, as well as a number of other vitamins and minerals. Vitamins A and E help to soothe, hydrate, and balance the skin. They also provide skin collagen which assists with wrinkles and other signs of ageing. Vitamin F contains essential fatty acids, and helps protect and revitalize damaged skin and hair. Shea Butter is an intense moisturizer for dry skin, and is a wonderful product for revitalizing dull or dry skin on the body or scalp. Try this all natural and simple body butter recipe right in your kitchen!

Ingredients:

Oil Phase -  10 tablespoons 100%

6 tablespoons of shea butter (60 %)

4 tablespoons of sunflower oil (40 %)

1 capsule of Vitamin E

Essentail oils (optional):

10 drops of Franckincense essential oil

10 drops of sweet orange essential oil

yield about 4 oz

Directions:

Add  the Shea butter and oil to your double boiler on low heat until they are melted.

Take it off the heat and start whipping with an electric mixer for two minutes.

Put the bowl into the freezer for 20 minutes. (not more or it will be impossible to whip right away) if the butter is too hard to be mixed, just leave it for a few minutes at room temperature.

Start whipping with an electric mixer for a few minutes, you will see that right away it turns white and fluffy. Add the essential oils and whip again for 1 or 2 minutes. I usually stop here but if you want to have a very fluffy whipped shea butter, you can putit back in the freezer for 10 minutes and whip again until you are happy with the constitency.

et voila, a shea butter without beeswax or any other chemicals. Since there is no water in this recipe, you can keep it for a year.

Cold and flu essential oils blend

19 Jan

Aromatherapy can be very useful for preventing and relieving the symptoms of cold and flu, I swear by it and heal myself only with essential oils. Prevention is key so as soon as you feel your throat itchy or have the first signs of a cold, use essential oils. Wild Oregon grape root for example is great to be taken internally when you feel the first symptom of a cold or flu. It boosts your immune system.

essential oils blendThis natural spray is perfect to spray in your room, your body and clothes when you are sick. You can also add this essential oils blend to your aromatherapy diffuser without the floral water. You could also substitute the floral water with almond or jojoba oil and use it as massage oil on your body. Don’t forget to massage your feet with it in the morning and before going to bed. It works wonders for me when I have a cough. Use care when taking essential oils, follow directions and ask advice to your health care professional or aroma therapist.

Ingredients:

1 cup of Floral water of Peppermint or Lemongrass.

10 drops of Essential oil of Eucalyptus

10 drops of Essential oil of Lemongrass

10 drops of Essential oil of Thyme

Directions:

Poor al the ingredients together in a glass spray bottle and shake well before use.

Word of wisdom: Thyme essential oil can be a skin irritant, do not use undiluted on your skin and do a 24 hours skin patch test if you are using the body spray on your skin and have sensitive skin.

Galen’s cold cream

15 Jan

The invention of cold cream is credited to Galen, a physician in the second century from Greece. This cream is thick and softens when it touches the skin.  It is perfect for dry skin on elbow, feet and knees and also for make up removal.

Water Phase: 9 teaspoon total – (45%)

9 teaspoons of rosewater

Oil phase: 9 teaspoon total– (45%)

9 teaspoons of almond oil or Olive oil

Natural Emulsifier: (10 %)

2 teaspoons of beeswax

EO Optional:

20-30 drops rose otto essential oil

Directions:

Combine the oils in your double boiler (or in a stainless steel or glass recipient inside a pan filled with water) on low heat and wait until everything is melted.

At the same time, put the water in another double boiler on low heat so that it reaches the same temperature as the oils.

Once the oil and beeswax are melted, take it off the heat and start whipping with an electric mixer for a few minutes; at the same time add the water spoon by spoon. Make sure your mixer is set on low speed. You can also use a hand whip if you prefer but it is more work!

After a few minutes, the liquid will soon turn into a cream as you progressively add the water. Once you have reached the creamy consistency desired, add the essential oils and blend. Scoop the cream in a sterile glass recipient and allow cooling at room temperature before putting the cap on.

Yield : about 2 Oz.

The truth about LUSH

12 Jan

Are you sitting down? (obviously you are!).

Are you ready to hear the truth?

Lush “believes in making effective products from fresh organic fruits and vegetables, the finest essential oils and safe synthetics.”

REALLY?

well lets see.. .here are the ingredients of the Sweetie Pie Shower Jelly:

POLYETHYLENE (what they call iridescent glitter!): Polyethylene is a polymer of ethylene monomers; may contain potentially toxic manufacturing contaminants such as 1,4-dioxane.*

METHYLPARABEN: Methylparaben is in the paraben family of preservatives used by the food, pharmaceutical, and personal care product industries. Parabens mimic estrogen and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptors.

LINALOOL: Linalool is a terpene. One or more animal studies show sense organ effects at low doses – RTECS®- National Technical Information Service 3729. One or more animal studies show brain, nervous system, or behavioral effect effects at moderate doses. RTECS®- Izvestiya na Instituta po Fiziologiya, Bulgarska Akademiya na Naukite 1973.*

PROPYLPARABEN: Propylparaben is in the paraben family of preservatives used by the food, pharmaceutical, and personal care product industries. Parabens mimic estrogen and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptors. Cancer: One or more in vitro tests on mammalian cells show positive mutation results, RTECS®- Mutation Research 2008.*

FD&C BLUE 1, FD&C RED 33 : FD&C Blue 1 is a synthetic dye produced from petroleum. This ingredient may be derived from animals. From PETA’s Caring Consumer: Pigments from animal, plant, and synthetic sources used to color foods, cosmetics, and other products. Cochineal is from insects. Widely used FD&C and D&C colors are coaltar (bituminous coal) derivatives that are continuously tested on animals due to their carcinogenic properties. Alternatives: grapes, beets, turmeric, saffron, carrots, chlorophyll, annatto, alkanet.*

PROPYLENE GLYCOL: Propylene glycol is a small organic alcohol commonly used as a skin conditioning agent. It has been associated with irritant and allergic contact dermatitis as well as contact urticaria in humans; these sensitization effects can be manifested at propylene glycol concentrations as low as 2%. Classified as expected to be toxic or harmful by the Environment Canada Domestic Substance List.  Cancer: One or more in vitro tests on mammalian cells show positive mutation results. RTECS®- Acta Pathologica et Microbiologica Scandinavica, Section A, Supplement 1981. *

Other Natural ingredients: Cherry infusion, coconut infusion, carrageenan Extract, bergamot oil, Cassis absolute, cypress oil.

So you wonder why they use those harmful chemicals?

There are several reasons:

  • The shelve life of the product would be reduced to only a few months instead of years.
  • They would lose a lot of money with unsold products in all their retails stores if they had to restock every few months.
  • Using natural and organic quality product is expensive  so they only use very little of it to reduce the cost of the product and to have a better margin. Chemicals are cheap…
  • Some of the chemicals  used produce lots of foam and consumers have been brainwashed thinking that whatever foam cleans.
  • These chemicals have been used since the creation of said products, 1938, and have been “grandfathered” into use by the FDA, with no new laws introduced since then…

Conclusion:  read labels, inform yourself, be a smart consumer and start making your own beauty products at home!

Remember that your skin is the largest organ in the body; what you put on your skin  is absorbed directly into your bloodstream.

Focus on Tamanu Oil

5 Jan

Tamanu Oil (Calophyllum inophyllum)

tamanu oil

tamanu oil

Tamanu oil has been thoroughly researched, and the conclusive evidence on its ability to heal damaged skin is overwhelming. Its benefits are notable for the treatment for scarring, stretch marks, minor cuts and abrasions, rashes, sores and much more.
Can be used directly on the skin or mixed within formulations.

Tamanu oil is a remarkable topical healing agent with skin healing, antineuralgic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibiotic and antioxidant properties. Tamanu oil’s botanical name is Calophyllum tacamahaca and/or Calophyllum Inophyllum–but it’s been called everything from Alexandrian Laurel to Pannay Tree to Sweet Scented Calophyllum, and in London it was once sold as Borneo Mahogany.

The Tamanu tree is indigenous to tropical Southeast Asia; it is found in Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, South India, Sri Lanka, and the Melanesian and Polynesian islands. It is grows up to three meters tall, sporting cracked, black bark and elliptical, shiny leaves. The Tamanu tree blooms twice annually with fragrant, white flowers, which later yield clusters of yellow-skinned spherical fruit. The fruit’s pulp tastes similar to an apple, within which a large nut is embedded. The nut contains an odorless pale kernel, called punnai in some Pacific areas. This kernel is dried in the sun for two months until it becomes sticky with a dark, thick, rich oil; it must be protected from humidity and rain during drying. This sticky oil is cold-pressed to make a greenish yellow oil similar to olive oil.  To put this spectacular oil into perspective, and to further justify its relatively high cost, It takes 100 kilograms of Tamanu fruit, the amount that one tree produces annually, to yield just 5 kilograms of cold pressed oil!  Natives believed the Tamanu tree was a sacred gift of nature and that gods hid in its branches.  It was their answer to skin protection from hot sun, high humidity and ocean wind.

Current and traditional use across the globe
Indonesians soak the leaf in water; the resulting blue solution is applied to inflamed eyes or taken internally for heatstroke.  It is used as an astringent for hemorrhoids in Philippines. The Manus of Papua New Guinea heat leaves over a fire until they soften, then apply them to skin ulcers, boils, cuts, sores and pimples. On Dobu Island, leaves are boiled, and the resulting solution is used to wash skin rashes.
In the Philippines, the sap is mixed with sulfur to create an ointment for boils, open sores and wounds.  In the 18th century, native Jamaicans used a similar species for wounds and sores.
Fiji natives use Tamanu oil for joint pains, arthritis, bruises, oozing wounds, chapped lips and preventing diaper rash.  In most south sea islands it is utilized as an analgesic for sciatica, rheumatism and ulcers.
Pacific islanders apply Tamanu oil to scrapes, cuts, burns, insect bites and stings, acne and acne scars, psoriasis, diabetic sores, anal fissures, sunburn, dry or scaly skin, blisters, eczema, diaper rash and herpes sores–and even to reduce foot and body odor!
In Europe, sometimes called Domba oil, it has a 70 to 75 percent success rate in alleviating rheumatism and scabies.  It’s also effective on gout and ringworm. It can be applied to mucous membrane lesions.  It heals chapped skin, post-surgical wounds, skin allergies, cracked skin, bed sores, wounds, rashes, abrasions, athlete’s foot, boils, and infected nails.
Tamanu oil has even healed severe burns caused by boiling water, chemicals and X-rays.  Its anti-inflammatory properties reduce rashes, sores, swelling and abrasions.  Tamanu oil promotes new tissue formation, accelerating healing and healthy skin growth.
Tamanu oil reputedly relieves a sore throat when it is applied to the neck. It’s pain-relieving properties have also been used traditionally to relieve neuralgia, shingles and believe it or not, leprous neuritis!  In the 1920s, Sister Marie-Suzanne, a nun stationed in Fiji, topically applied Tamanu oil to leprosy victims with positive results.

More Powerful than an Antibiotic
Tamanu oil possesses significant antimicrobial qualities, as proven in antibacterial and antifungal tests.  It contains powerful bactericide and fungicide agents that defeat human and animal pathogens.  Tamanu can be applied directly to skin, undiluted. There are no reports of adverse effects from topical application. Tamanu oil has also compared favorably against antibiotics in alleviating these maladies:

  • Bladder infections
  • Wound infections
  • Septicemia
  • Pneumonias
  • Abscesses
  • Boils
  • Conjunctivitis
  • The cause of diphtheria
  • Infected burns
  • Urinary tract infections
  • The cause of Madura Foot, which causes the foot’s skin to swell and split
  • Jock itch
  • Ringworm
  • Athlete’s foot

Treatment for scars
Tamanu oil fades stretch marks with incredible results.  It also works miracles on scar tissue, making scars look less unsightly. BioScience Laboratories conducted a study of Tamanu oil’s ability to improve the appearance of scars.  Six subjects with obvious scars aged for one year or more participated in the test.  Subjects were not allowed to use moisturizers on their scarred areas for seven days before the test or throughout the nine-week test period.  Scars were rated for roughness, length, width and degree of difference from surrounding normal skin.  Measurements of darkness and redness were also taken for scarred and surrounding normal skin. Digital photos of scars were taken prior to initial application and at the end of week nine. Tamanu oil was applied to the scarred area twice daily for nine consecutive weeks.  There was significant improvement in appearance of scars after six weeks, and improvement continued through week nine.  Scar length was reduced by an average 0.28 centimeters, and width was reduced by an average 0.12 centimeters!

This is the perfect oil for acne. It can be used directly and undiluted on the face as it is non greasy and oily.

The best organic and natural toners

27 Dec

I never use commercial toners, never felt it was needed. In my opinion toners are just an invention from cosmetic giants to make us consume more.

Your skin pH is a result of the skin’s acid mantle, a mixture of sebum (skin oils) and sweat that form on the surface of your skin. This acid mantle keeps the pH of your skin at about 4 to 4.5 (Remember, low pH like 1 to 5 is acidic, high pH 8 or above is basic, and the middle, around 7, is neutral.) This slightly acidic pH is a good thing on your skin because it helps ward off harmful bacteria.

When you wash your skin, you strip away this acid mantle. I never use any soap, neither wash nor toner on my face and do not recommend you to use any.

Of course when you are use to  wash your face with soap, the switch from washing your face to just rinsing with warm water will be troublesome for most (it was for me when I made the switch 5 years ago) but you will be glad you did.

Washing your face with an alcohol base toner or soap remove the sebum that is suppose to protect your skin and you end up with oily skin as your skin is trying to create more sebum to create that natural barrier. In the end you end up with an imbalanced and too oily skin which can create pimples and black heads.

To help you make the switch you can you natural alternative such as aloe vera juice, rose, neroli and lavender flower water. They are very gently cleansing and hydrating without removing too much of  the natural sebum. You can use them every day but also try to just rinse your face with warm (not hot) water. You can also use the floral water to remove make up.

Natural Soothing Body Cream

13 Dec

Coconut is  a great oil for general moisturizing and serves as a protective layer, helping to retain the moisture in your skin. It also acts as a mild oil suitable for those with inflamed and irritated skin, and those with skin sensitivities. Jojoba Oil is very similar to the natural oil our skin produces, though it is technically a liquid wax produced from the seed of the Jojoba simmondsia chinensis shrub. Best known for its ability to calm and ease the overly anxious, Chamomile hydrosol also has a true floral scent and is great to use in any cream.

Honey, Sweet orange and cinnamon lip balm

1 Dec

Castor oil is a vegetable oil obtained from the castor bean a natural emollient that penetrates the skin and helps stimulate the production of collagen and elastin which can soften and hydrate the skin. Cinnamon and sweet orange are very comforting making this lip balm perfect for the winter and Christmas season!

Natural Emulsifier – 40 %

4 tablespoon Beeswax (or 3 only if you prefer a softer lip balm)

Oil phase – 60 %

1 tablespoon Castor oil

½ tablespoon of liquid honey

½ tablespoon of calendula oil

2 tablespoon of sweet almond oil

2 tablespoon of raw shea butter

1 capsule of vitamin e

Essential oils:

5 drops of Cinnamon leaf essential oils

5 drops of sweet orange essential oils

Directions:

Melt beeswax, oils, and honey in a double boiler of very low heat. Once melted take it off the heat and start whipping with an electric mixer until the liquid becomes frosty and the honey well blended. (at first you will see the honey at the bottom of the oils, that means it is not well mixed).

Add essential oils and pour the mixture into lip balm container before it starts to solidify.

If it has already starting to solidify, don’t panic! Put it back into the double boiler for a few seconds until it melts again and poor the rest in the containers.

Words of wisdom: Cinnamon leaf essential oil must be use with caution. Please do not increase the percentage of drops in your lip balm. Cinnamon essential oil can be a mucous membrane irritant and strong skin sensitizer. Only the oil from the leaf should be used.  I never had any problems with this lip balm which is one of my favorite!

Yield: about 1.5 oz
