How to Tint Your DIY Lip Balm Naturally?

Add a hint of beautiful sheen and color to your lips by incorporating beetroot powder, micas or vegetable and natural colorants if you want to make a natural tinted lip balm recipe.

  • Beetroot is a powerful vegetable, which when eaten not just taints your lips, but also the tongue and even your teeth. It helps clear the pigmentation on lips so it makes sense to add beetroot powder in your lip balm recipe.
  • Mica pigments are natural minerals that are purified and then crushed, and range from matte to sparkling or opalescent. This powder is considered safe for lips, eyes, and cheeks.
  • Grenadine Natural vegetable colorant found on Aroma zone. This 100% vegetable dye-based on organic vegetable oils allows you to color your lip balm and lipstick in pink to light red tones. Love the bright pink color!

Are Micas Dangerous For Your Health?

Mica has no documented health side effects, however, prolonged inhalation of mica powder may result in irritation of the respiratory tract, which can be common in workers who process mica powder or are involved with the production. Mica powders are considered safe in beauty products but I personally use them rarely because they do have health consequences to workers and are not 100% natural or raw materials.

Ask yourself, do you REALLY need it?

Alternative to Beeswax – DIY Vegan lip balm

While most people use beeswax in their DIY lip balms, there are other alternatives as well:

  • Candelilla Wax A hard wax that not only adds shine but also firmness to lip products. It is a perfect alternative to beeswax if you are looking for a vegan product, although it is firmer than the latter. If you are looking to make a vegan lip balm with candelilla wax, then head here to my 5 stars rated recipe!
  • Soy Wax Another good alternative if you are looking to create a vegan lip balm. It has a high melting point and greatly complements the texture of your lips.

What Is Lip Balm Made Out Of?

Lip balms are made up of wax-like substances that are used topically. They help moisturize and relieve dry and chapped lips, cold sores etc. While there may be a number of ingredients used in lip balms, one common ingredient is wax, which may be from a plant or animal source.

Where Can I Buy Lip Balm Containers?

You can buy lip balm containers on Amazon for as low as $2. They may be delivered on the same day in some areas, love the convenience!

here are my favorites:

You can find more of my favorite lip balm containers here!

One useful item is a Lip Balm Container Tray Kit with Fill Tray and Spatula that is BPA Free, it helps to hold the lip balm containers when you pour the lip balm wax and so it does not spill everywhere. Nothing more annoying than having to clear hard wax that spilled on your kitchen counter! See my mess below…

Which Essential Oils to Add to Your Lip Balm?

There is a variety of essential oils that you can incorporate in your Soap Queen Lip balm recipe; however, there are others that should be avoided. While you may get too excited and experiment with more than one, you need to know that the recipe can quickly turn overpowering and weigh heavy on your lips. Some of the most common essential oils used in lip balms include:

  • Peppermint Essential Oil – It is both refreshing and rejuvenating, and also helps strengthen the immune system. It also helps brighten up tired skin. It contains menthol that helps soothe and leave a cooling effect on the lips, making them appear plump.
  • Rosemary Essential Oil – Rosemary has a powerful scent, which gives the lip balm that shine and plushness. It also leaves the lips looking silky smooth.

Which Essential Oils to Avoid In Your Lip Balm? (or use with caution)

You may not want to use lemon oil or cinnamon oil in your lip balm for the following reasons:

  • Lemon essential oil is phototoxic and if you expose yourself under the sun, it can irritate and burn your lips. It can also leave your lips feeling irritated so it is best to avoid in the use of lip balm or on your skin.
  • Cinnamon leaf essential oil can also be too fragrant and may sting or be irritant if used in larger quantities in lip balms which is NOT recommended. Diluted and used with caution in a limited amount can give a “plump” effect to your lips. Check out my cinnamon lip balm recipe here.

What Should Be the Dilution of Essential Oil for Your Lip Balm?

The dilution of essential oil in your DIY tinted lip balm recipe with coconut oil must be close to 1%. Going for a higher dilution percentage may make it irritant for your lips.

Commercial lip balms contain a ton of chemicals and can be too pricey. Just follow this guide on how to make lip balm DIY with only 3 ingredients, adding your own flair, and rock those glossy, fuller lips at more than half the price!

The soywax will make your lip balm hard. If you find your lip balm too soft, simply increase the amount of soywax!
