If you are looking for a simple and natural way of taking care of your face while preventing the appearance of fine lines, you should make this easy DIY face serum recipe. It’s as easy as blending organic rosehip oil and essential oils together!
There is no need to heat up anything, nor even create an emulsion. Just pour the rosehip oil and essential oils, shake it and use it!
DIY Anti Aging Serum – What Does that Really Mean?
Before we start, let’s get one thing out of the way – there is no such thing as anti-aging. I mean, how did this word even come up? We all know that aging is a natural process and that there is no stopping it.
However, you can slow down the aging process, or make sure that your age in a healthy and beautiful manner. Fortunately, that’s what I’m here to tell you about – how to make your own DIY face serum! It’ll cost you way less than a branded serum, it’s super easy to make, and it’ll be 100% organic. Not to forget, it’ll smell absolutely heavenly. Sounds perfect, right?
Best Essential Oil for Deep Wrinkles Recipe
There’s a ton of essential oils out there that all claim to work wonders on wrinkles, age spots, and fine lines, but I’ve compiled a list of the best essential oils that will actually do the job. Don’t take my word for it, try it for yourself and see the difference!
- Ylang ylang essential oil: Although majorly known for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, ylang-ylang also helps encourage cell reproduction, improves elasticity, and smoothens out fine lines.
- Neroli Oil: It contains citral, a chemical known for cell regeneration. It also helps improve skin tightening and fights scarring and wrinkles, resulting in your skin feeling rejuvenated and healthy.
DIY Face Serum With Coconut Oil
Coconut oil isn’t something that I would recommend adding in your face serum. All types of oils have a comedogenic rating, which ranks oils and butters based on their likelihood to clog pores. Preferably, you should choose oils that have a comedogenic rating between 0-2. Coconut oil has a rating of 4, which makes it highly comedogenic and therefore, highly likely to clog pores and cause acne.
Rosehip Oil for Wrinkles – Why Does it Work?
This is probably the best anti-wrinkle oil out there. Rosehip oil is rich in Vitamin A, which is known to reduce age spots and wrinkles. Its molecules are small enough to penetrate deep into the skin and work their magic in improving collagen levels and nourishing the skin.
Can You Mix Frankincense and Rosehip Oil?
Yes, Frankincense can be mixed with Rosehip oil. In fact, both of them together make a beautiful, soothing facial blend perfect for your skin!
Store-bought face serums can be quite expensive and the problem is that can never be quite sure of the quality of their ingredients.
These are the very reasons why I have decided to make a DIY face serum recipe with essential oils that is anti-wrinkles. I believe that you can save money and have a higher quality product when you are making a homemade face serum.
Even my boyfriend who is very picky loves using this organic face oil! This works on sensitive skin as well. If your skin is extremely sensitive, I would only use a few drops of lavender oil with the rosehip oil and skip all the other essential oils at first.
What are the ingredients of my DIY face serum recipe?
Rosehip oil comes from the seeds of rosehip fruit from Chile.
It has a smooth and thin texture and is not greasy. The best quality rosehip oil has an orange and almost red color. It will not color your skin but can help give you a healthy tanned glow naturally.
Rosehip oil is filled with vitamins, antioxidants, and fatty acids that hydrate the skin, repair damage from free radicals, reduce skin discoloration.
Keep in mind that not all rosehip oils are created equal. To ensure that you are using the highest quality, you should look for two things in the label—cold-pressed and certified organic.
Cold-pressed is the best extraction method because it ensures the maximum vitamin content and potency of the oil.
A certified organic rosehip oil has not been grown with pesticides or insecticides and contains no chemicals, preservatives, and parabens that may harm the skin.
Used on its own, rosehip oil helps to fight Eczema, Rosacea, Dermatitis, Psoriasis. It is great to reduce skin redness and uneven skin tone as well.
The price of a 30 ml bottle ranges from $15 to $45 and you can buy online here.
2. Rose geranium essential oil
Considered to be one of the best essential oils for aging, rose geranium essential oil is derived from stalks and leaves of a shrub called Pelargonium and has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It also helps reduce wrinkles, fight skin infection, promote skin healing, and boost the regeneration of skin cells. Plus it scent is delightful, it has a sweet peppery and musky rose scent.
3. Frankincense essential oil
Frankincense Oil is extracted from the gum or resin from Frankincense or Olibanum trees. I have included this anti-aging face oil in my recipe because it reduces skin discoloration, increases blood flow making the skin more smooth.
4. Helichrysum essential oil
Also known as Everlasting and Immortelle essential oil found in most skin care products because of its ability to promote healing of wounds, relieve sunburn, prevent skin cancer, treat acne, fight off infection and keep fungi at bay.
5. Sandalwood essential oil
Sandalwood essential oil takes good care of your skin by soothing sunburns, shrinking skin pores, promoting an even skin texture, fighting off bacteria and fungi that cause acne.
6. Carrot seed essential oil
Carrot seed oil is high in antioxidants, it’s a natural essential oil for any anti-aging skin face serum and perfect for mature skin. The oil also contains vitamin E and vitamin C, which works together to regenerate your skin.
Now, I know what you are thinking! No, you don’t need to use all those essential oils to have a good face serum, you can definitely skip 1 or two and still have a great face oil recipe.
DIY Anti Aging Face Oil Recipe – is Oil Good for Your Face?
There’s a lot of controversy in the skincare industry when it comes to whether oils are good for your skin or not. It’s very important to understand your skin type, and then choosing an oil that will complement it, rather than work against it. Here are a few tried and tested essential oils that are great to tackle your wrinkle issues.
- Jojoba Oil: Whilst research says that jojoba oil doesn’t directly help wrinkles, it helps to deeply moisturize the skin, which in turn reduces the appearance of wrinkles and give the skin an even, smooth tone.
- Pomegranate Seed Oil: It is rich in punicic acid, which is a fatty acid which helps unclog pores, block free radicals, and help the skin age in a smooth, radiant manner.
- Chia Seed Oil: Highly rich in omega-3 fatty acids, chia seed oil works in making your skin look plump. It also balances the skin’s moisture levels, thereby working as a great anti-wrinkle agent.
- Prickly Pear Oil: Trust me, you don’t want to judge this oil by its name. Rich in vitamins E and K, prickly pear oil is great for brightening your skin, restoring elasticity and softening wrinkles. It also stimulates cell growth, enabling your skin to feel smoother and younger with every use.
Is using oil on my face going to make me break out?
Do you think that putting oil on your face will make it more oily and even clog your pores?
That’s a common urban legend and one of the many marketing tactics the giants of commercial beauty love to spread around. “Oil will clog your pores and make your skin break out”.
The truth is not all oils are suitable to use on your face but rosehip oil is one of them.
Rosehip oil is a dry oil as it absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave any oily residue on your face. Therefore, it does not clog pores.
If your face is oily, it is because there is an unbalance of sebum. You are either cleaning your face too hard, scrubbing it too often, or using chemicals that destroy the natural sebum barrier and cause imbalance and skin breakout.
The one thing you can do to save your skin from breaking out it to switch to an all-natural and simple routine.
Clean your skin by applying a natural organic rose hydrosol with a cotton pad and then massage rosehip oil on your face.
That’s it. This is what saved me from endless skin breakout and after sticking to this simple routine, I was able to keep my acne under control.
Also, please keep in mind, acne is a symptom of an internal problem and usually a result of a “poor” diet.

You should use it twice a day, morning and evening for at least 2 weeks to min a month to see the results on your face.
I’ve been using this face oil recipe for years and it’s my secret weapon when I want clear and smooth skin.

Hi Eve, thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge and recipes (this is a fantastic serum!). I really appreciate the care you put into your blog! I do have one question that may seem obvious, but I would really appreciate some clarification.
How do you calculate the number of drops of diluted essential oils when making recipes? For example, I have diluted Helichrysum. If it is a 10% blend, would you put 10 times the number of drops in your recipe (i.e. 20 drops instead of 2?) This makes sense mathematically, but are there other factors I’m unaware of?
I don’t want to overdo it! Especially because I am also planning to make a 0.5% eye serum, which requires only 1 drop of pure EO per 10ml roller. So if my recipe calls for 1 drop of pure Rose Otto, would you put 10 drops of 10% Rose Otto instead?
Thank you once again for sharing your inspiration and expertise!
All the best!
Thank you so much for this serum recipe. This knowledge of being able to create your own superior beauty products without having to rely on mass produced, chemically laden commercial concoctions is so appreciated. Truly, thank you so much. I bought your ebook last year and have made this particular recipe again and again and AGAIN (that and your AMAZING moisturizer and peppermint lip balm). I love it. My skin loves it. Thank you for teaching me how to create and nourish my skin with such beautiful ingredients. Much love from Australia! xo Winter
Hi Eve,
Just so you know, the “Serving” slider is not working…probably because you made most ingredients listed a hyperlink. I noticed that the two essential oils that you did NOT make a hyperlink for do increase/decrease with the slider but none of the other ingredients do. Too bad, because I wanted to make a bigger batch.
Hi Eve
Bought your book a s am working my way through making them all. I love them. The DIY FACE SERUM for anti wrinkles what size bottle as it doesn’t state in your book. Please can you help me. Many thanks In Advance and keeping the recipes coming I love them

Ève thank you for you help you are fantastic keep it up

Hi Eve,
Thank you for sharing your recipe for this anti-aging face serum! I’ve been using it for a while now and on my 3rd batch. The only ingredient I don’t have is the Sandalwood, but it’s lovely just the same. I will be ordering a copy of your book!!
All the best,
Deborah
Author
so nice of you to say Deborah, thank you very much for the feedback 🙂
Hi Eve,
I was so excited when I found your blog (albeit much later than others I see!) I’m just beginning to experiment with making DIY beauty products for myself. My question for you is how would you compare the benefits of Rosehip oil to Argan Oil for the face? And also vitamin E oil? I ask because those are the oils I currently have at home to work with and am wondering if they have any equal benefits combined. I currently struggle with very dry skin, increased signs of aging and wrinkles, and malasma spots.
Also do you know how I might be able to combine my homemade rice water to this serum?
Thanks so much for your time:)
Miriam
Hi Eve,
Please I don’t understand the measurement, when you say 12 drops and 6 drops.is it like 12 tablespoons or teaspoon
Often, essential oils come with a reducer in the top of the bottle which allows you to add the essential oils to your creations a drop at a time so she actually means 12 drops or 6 drops. Hope that helps.
I have dried rose hips. Can I make my own oil? If so ratio please. I enjoy your website.
Simple but effective. Eve is spot-on with her information
Hi, Eve. I wanted alternatives to expensive creams that only lighten pockets! That’s when I stumbled on your website. I liked your recipe and am trying to find the ingredients… But I do have some posers.
I live in a hot, humid place. I am going through perimenopause so my combination skin is not as acne prone as it used to be, though I do breakout sometimes. Hence, I cannot use a heavy mix of oils on my face.
What combination of oils can you suggest for an anti wrinkle serum? Can grapeseed oil and/or clary sage essential oil be used for wrinkles? I really could use your advise.
Author
Hi Joan, the recipe I have shared is perfect for acne prone skin. Its a misconception that using oil on your face will make you break out, it depends on the oil you use.
Rosehip oil is great!
Hello Eve.
Thank you for this post! I recently found your site. I have some of the essential oils that you list. I have Helichrysum, frankincense, Rosehip oil, carrot seed (carrier) oil along with some others. I also have myrrh, copaiba, lavender, jojoba oil. Can I replace some of the oils in your recipe with some of the ones that I currently have? If so, which ones should I use and how much? I am fifty-something years old with a few wrinkles. Please let me know. I am excited to try this but am not sure what to use. Thank you!
Author
Hi Carla, you can use rosehip oil with Helichrysum, frankincense and lavender essential oil. keep the same proportion as my recipe in terms of ratio carrier oil + essential oil!
Hi. I just found your site and love all of the information. I am somewhat new to essential oils. I am looking for a face serum for 50 ish skin to help with some wrinkles and uneven tone. my skin is also sensitive. I have jojoba oil, Carrot seed carrier oil, frankinscence, myrrh, lavender and a few others. Can you recommend a serum recipe with any of these oils? I can also get others if needed.
Thank you!
I Eve. I love and really enjoy your recipes. Thanks soo much for share some so previous.
I have 2 doubts: I have Aloe Vera plant in my house. Can I prepare de Aloe vera juice? How Can I do that!
Another one: I have Rose essential oil . Can I prepare de water rose from this oil?
Best regards
Hi can you substitute helichrysanthan with another oil .
Author
Hi Deborah, you can just remove it.
Hi Eve, thank you for sharing your knowledge! I’ve been using EO for over a year and I love it since it’s all natural. I recently came across your post and I wanted to try it. Tonight is the first time I’m using it. Since I already made the mix and the scent is very strong, is there a way to tone the scent down? Thank you.
Author
Hi Jes, you can simply reduce the amount of essential oils by half if you think the scent is too strong.
I love your site and info. Best part is… “No popup Ads!” I will try a recipe or two and prospect some products. Thank you!
Hi, I am excited to try this and explore your other recipies. I’m wondering if this would be helpful for fine lines around the lipline.
Thanks!
Author
most definitely!
I made this serum and am very happy with the results so far; however, I am not fond of the strong rose fragrance and had to do a little doctoring. Any suggestions? Also, do u have a face serum for men. My significant other could really use a moisturizer and wrinkle solution. Thank you!
Author
If you don’t like rose geranium scent then simply don’t use it. You could replace with ylang-ylang if this is more to your liking.
For your boyfriend, only keep frankincense and sandalwood essential oil for a more masculine scent, or don’t use any at all.
Hi Eve, I’m new to your blog, but I have been making my own products for a while, your recipes look great! Many thanks for sharing so much wonderful stuff. I have hyaluronic acid and DMAE powders, do you have any recipe for those? Is it worth doing anything with them? Are they really antiaging? Many thanks again!!!
Author
HI Nora, thank you for your kind comments, glad you like my recipes 🙂
I never used hyaluronic acid and be careful with using DMAE powder as it has some side effects https://www.zwivel.com/blog/dmae-products-for-skin/
Those are not natural ingredients but made in a lab!
Thank you sooo much!! You rock! I really appreciate you taking the time to answer and to validate it with a very interesting article supported by studies.
Author
thanks Nora 🙂
I just made this facial serum. I am rating it five stars for the ease as well as the silky feel.
I will be back in a week or two. Thx.
I have been on your site for a month now and am so impressed. My mother in law and I made this serum the other day. We love it. I have been using expensive face cream from department store for a couple of years because it is so dry. With this serum I didn’t need any face cream. But should I be using a cream with this? And can I use it around my eyes?
Also I just made the Shea and ucuuba body cream. At first it was a little greasy but quickly absorbed.
Thanks for a great site.
Author
awesome! thanks Hollie 🙂
you don’t need a face cream, this serum/oil recipe is sufficient.
Hello,
I live natural products. I was thinking about making a roll on eye oil with Rosehip Oil and Jojoba oil. How would you dilute it? Both are carrier oils so would 50-50 be okay? Thanks a lot
Author
Yes, that would work just fine, great combo!
You always have such great recipes! I can’t wait to try this.
Author
Thanks Christine 🙂
I have used this recipe for face serum for at least a year. I love it! It is just the thing for the dry desert.
Author
Thanks Dee 🙂
I love this face serum recipe and have been making it for over a year now. I sent some to my Sister as a gift, and now she uses it, too. This serum will always be a part of my daily routine. Thank you for sharing your awesome recipes, Eve!
Heyy , How are you? What could i use for a face serum for all types of skin ? Is there a way I can talk to you directly ? Im putting together my own skincare line and I want the best opinions from the best .
Author
Hi Akkiko, I am actually working on a face serum for all skin types so stay tuned. You can always drop me a line here but for now I don’t do one and one by phone by lack of time!
Hi –
Can you please help make a recipe for me?
I have Safflower seed oil as my carrier oil (from Derma e)
Essentials Oils are Carrot seed oil and Helichrysum Italicum
I only want to use those as essential oils are expensive in my area and my main goal is to fade acne scars.
Thanks!
Author
Hi Princess, easy you just have to follow the same ratio as my recipe:
30 ml of safflower oil
6 drops of Carrot seed essential oil
6 drops of Helichrysum Italicum essential oil
2% dilution in 30 ml is 12 drops of essential oils.
A friend just gave me your wedsite and it’s great, thanks! In this recipe you call for Rose Geranium EO. When I click on the link regular Geramium oil comes up. Is there a difference? If so can you tell me where to find Rose Geranium?
Author
Hi Jess, thanks for your note! yes there is a difference and I prefer using rose geranium, here is the link https://amzn.to/2QslJiQ, hope this helps 🙂
Hi Eve,
Why don’t you write a book on your recipes and sell it on amazon. Moreover, it’s best to start your own business of organic skin care. Your recipes are really great.
Better invest some revenue in your own business.
Start small and then scale it up. If I were you I would have started a business from the income generated from my recipe blog.
Best wishes!
Author
Thanks for your wishes Farah, I have actually been working on a book for years but its hard to finish when working full time. It’s hard to juggle keeping the blog up and writing a book at the same, all in due time I guess 🙂
Hi Eve – is the serum to be used under moisturisers or on its own?
Author
on its own!
Hi Eve,
I came across your website because I was looking for a facial serum I could make with essential oils. This looks perfect!!! I’m 35 and recently have noticed age spots on my forehead and of course fine lines and wrinkles. I currently just use aveeno face wash and their moisturizer with SPF 30, BUT looking to go natural. Can this facial serum replace my moisturizer, and if so can I add anything to it for SPF? I was thinking of making one for morning, with SPF and one for night maybe with lemon EO for my age spots?
Thanks!
Author
Hi jamie, never put lemon eo on your face as it is photosensitive and can leave marks and burn your skin.
Jojoba oil has natural SFP but I would say best to use a hat to protext your face.
Thank you!
Carrot seed oil is also an excellent SPF!
How can I know what is safe mix together and what is the difference between essential oils and carrier oils?
Can I use neroli oil as well with your recipe for ageing skin?
Author
yes, definitely.
Hi Eve
I’m a 75 year old woman from Scotland and just discovered your site.
I have been ill for a couple of years now in the winters so my face is very lined due in part I think to central heating. Can you please help me with a really good recipe for anti ageing. The creams I amusing are not effective even though they are not cheap. I need treatment on my face, eyes and neck. I would be so grateful for your help
Author
This is my favorite recipe https://www.organic-beauty-recipes.com/diy-face-serum-recipe-anti-wrinkles-with-essential-oils/
hello, is there any reason on why you’re making the essential oils 2% diluted? is 2% the best estimation? would it cause any harm if i make it more than 2%? thank you
Author
for the face, it is best not to go over 2% dilution or it could cause irritation to the skin. EO are very powerful, you don’t need a lot.
Hi Eve, I really enjoy your blog and I’m planning to make this myself. I have some questions though, so I’ve searched for another plant-based oils that’s beneficial for aging skin, they’re rosehip seed oil, pomegranate seed oil, and evening primrose oil. Do you recommend combining them to enhance its effectiveness for anti-aging, and if so, is there any guide for the measurements? And I saw some recipes that adds Vitamin E to the serum for anti-oxidant to prolong its shelf-life, do you think it’s necessary or you can just skip it? Thank you in advance.
Author
Hi Saras, thanks for your kind words! you can miz 1/3 rosehip oil, 1/3 pomegranate and 1/3 evening primrose oil. You don’t need vitamin E.
Hi I’ve just made this recipe and the rose hip oil is very orange and makes my skin look orange. Any suggestions?
Author
Rosehip oil is orange and it will give you a tan glow but you won’t look orange as it absorbs right away.
I found this recipe for a rose hip serum on the Internet . After seeing your % of drops per essential oil, is this too much for an ounce of serum? Ingredients:
1 oz or 2 tbsp rosehip oil
10 drops frankincense essential oil
5 drops helichrysum essential oil
5 drops myrrh essential oil
5 drops geranium essential oil
I made this and I do like it a lot but now I am concerned this may too much essential oil for 1 oz?
by the way is it okay to mention your website once i film a video making one of your recipe?
Author
Hi Julia, the recipes on my properties are copyrighted so I would need you to add a link in the comment of the video to the original recipe please.
ok,i will do that.thank you very much.
Thanks for every diy you share..this will help us a lot.the kitty was staring.he’s curious.so cute.
I recently was diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis on my face and scalp which also with my thyroid caused my hair to go into the chronic TE stage 🙁 I am trying to get this dermatitis clear, redness, anti-aging, and though my skin is dry my pores have enlarged. I am dumbfounded about my pores. What I did find out that it has been proven that the pore on the out layer of skin can be shrunk if you can get the sebaceous glands under the skin to balance out. I am still trying to figure this all out. What are your thoughts on this?
Author
Look at the problem inside out (e.g diet) and if you can go see a naturopathic doctor. For your face, avoid changing and doing too many things to it as you will unbalance your sebum glands even more and cause more acne. Avoid foundation.
For example, clean your face with rosewater or also called rose hydrosol (great for balancing) and hydrate with jojoba oil, organic if you can.
I will post a recipe about a simple step by step facial routine to reduce acne soon, stay tuned.
Hi Eve, I am reading your post for the first time. I really loved it. Can i replace rosehip oil with jojoba oil ? Also I have the following essential oils.. Frankincense, Geranium, Ylang Ylang, Rose. Will these be sufficient, or I should add few other essential oils to the recipe ? I am 30 and i started having slight wrinkles around my eyes. I have large pores and few marks from pimples that appeared a month ago. I have no acne problem except for a one or two pimples now and then. I am also very sensitive to sun. I tan very easily. Will these oils alone help ?
Author
I really love jojoba oil for the face! great for mature and acne prone skin. all the essential oils are great to use, just make sure you don’t add more than needed, less is more 🙂
Hello Eve:
I am a 66 year old who use to spend hours in the sun. I have numerous brown spots on my face , chest and arms. I also have a couple of spots close to the eyes. I want to try essential oils. I have purchased the following: Simpler’s Botanical Frankincense CO2 Boswellia carterii Essent. Oil, Aura Cacia, pure essent. oils Vanilla (in Jojoba Oil), Now essent. oils Myrrh 20% oil blend (Commiphora myrrha) contains pure jojoba oil & pure myrruh oil, Fractionated Coconut Oil 100% Pure. I would like to know which of these oils I can safely mix together, and in what proportions should I mix them? Anxiouxly awaiting your reply. Thank You.
Author
Hi Kathy, you can use frankincense and Myrr but I would not use vanilla, nor coconut oil as its comedogen.
Best to stick to the recipe I provided for best results.
You can use pure jojoba oil instead of rosehip oil.
Just noticed you mentioned to a previous poster to combine 4 drops each of frankincense, carrot seed oil and rose geranium into a 30 ml bottle of rosehip seed oil if purchasing all of the ingredients in your DIY serum are too costly. Will it work dramatically better and produce results faster if these 3 anti-aging essential oils are used together with the rosehip seed oil than just using the rosehip seed oil by itself for softening fine lines and wrinkles? I have sensitive skin, but so far, the rosehip seed oil by itself isn’t creating a reaction. Is there a way to only apply a small amount of each of these essential oils directly into the 2 drops of the rosehip seed oil I’ve been putting on my face daily? I want to be sure that I won’t have a problem with the essential oils before putting it into a full bottle of the rosehip seed oil, and that it may be better than just applying the roseseed hip oil by itself twice a day, as I have been doing.
Thanks for your input.
Author
The essential oils I use in this serum are great to reduce fine lines and wrinkles but they need to be diluted at 2% so 12 drops in 30 ml rosehip oil. Never put essential oils directly in your face and avoid higher dilutions.
Hi Eve,
I’m wondering if it matters where the rosehip seed oil is sourced from so long as it is cold-pressed and organic. The one you reference on Amazon is from Chile. I bought from Life-flo which is supposed to be a very reputable company, but it comes from the United States. I just stumbled on your website, but had read that even rosehip seed oil on its own can soften fine lines and wrinkles. The one I bought has Vitamin E added to it (obviously to increase the shelf life but I understand it can help, too). Would love to know what you think. (I had wanted to start out small and see that this even works. Many online reviews swear by the rosehip oil on its own.
Author
Hi Claudia, is it certified organic by USDA?
Its best if there are no vitamin E added and usually it comes from Chile.
What is the name and brand of the product you bought? I will take a look.
Please can I the serum to my body cream?
Author
it would be expensive to use rosehip oil on your whole body, unless you can afford it!
hai sister… can i use argan oil to this face serum receipe… i had oily to normal skin and had pimples-pimple marks and pores… for this any other to add?
Author
sure, you can but I found it does not help my acne. I prefer to use rosehip oil.
Hi Eve,
Great website! Could you please explain in what order do you apply your facial products and how? Thank you. Rachel
Author
First clean your face with a cotton ball and an hydrosol (flower water) or aloe vera
then apply the face oil.
I’m new to the use of essential oils for skin care and face products.
I noticed you mentioned a couple of times not to use lemon, lemon grass, orange
essential oils on the face. If you don’t mind can ask why and does that pertain to all
citrus essential oils?
Love your recipe, will be trying this one.
Author
Because those essential oils are phototoxic which means they will burn your skin, leave marks when you go under the sun.
Hi Eve, thank you so much for the recipe. I find it very informative. Can i use the face serum as I have a combination skin, I am prone to breakouts when stressed which has now changed my skin tone to a darker color. I am looking at something that will keep the breakout at bay and will clear the scars and uneven skin tone. I have bought Rosehip Oil, Neem Oil, lemon oil, lavender oil. Is there anything that I can add
Author
you are welcome! if you have acne, its best to use only one oil at the time, for example, start with rosehip oil for at least 1 month before changing to something else. You can use the above recipe with or without essential oils. Essentials do help if you have them on hand. Do not use lemon oil on your face as it is phototoxic.
Hi, I do not have a rose but i want to try a best you can recommend me from the list:
Carrier oils:
Sweet almond
Walnut
Apricot
Poppy seed
Essential:
Lemon
Orange
Lavender
Ylang ylang
Rosemary
Jojoba
Tea tree
Which 2 combination you can best suggest me and wont be gressy.
Author
I would use poppy seed oil that contains high amounts of linoleic acid and good at soothing inflammation. it’s a light oil. Add a few drops of lavender, and ylang ylang essential oil. No lemon, no rosemary and no orange on the face pls.
Hi, great site. I’d like to try the serum, but do I have to use so many essential oils?
Can it be reduced to 2 or 3 (haha) really?
I’d like to start small and then branch out.
Thank you. Saumya
Author
sure, you don’t have to use all the essential oils but they do help. If I had to pick 3, I would do rose geranium (or rose otto), frankincense and carrot seed essential oil.
Hi; can we also add avocado and olive oil to this recipe?
Author
Olive oil is way too greasy and comedogen for the face so no. For avocado oil, it can be use on the face but not more than 10% as it has a greasy feeling as well.
Hello Eve, Thank you so much for sharing this face serum recipe! I made it a few weeks ago and I love it! I had been using a similar purchased one for almost two years now and it contained a bit more filler oils and I wanted to concentrate the rosehip oil and other beneficial E.O.’s, so I was thrilled to see your recipe. It was also very helpful to see the explanation of the benefits of each oil. So, again, thank you for sharing and inspiring people to DIY and promote healthy living.

Hi Nancy, just like you i am fairly new to the world of essential oils. I’ve been experimenting for a year. I have a very dry & flaky scalp I’m 51 i have sensitive skin that breaks out once a month. I tried a few different combinations and the one that worked for me which i also use as a face serum is 2 tbsp coconut oil, 3 drops lavender oil, 3 drops tea tree oil, 3 drops frankincense, 3 drops rose oil, 3 drops geranium. I barely have any wrinkles and the breakouts and dry scalp are so much better. I use the serum on my face twice a day before moisturizing. And on my scalp after washing my hair twice a week.
Hello! I am very new to making my own natural products. One question i have is can safflower oil be substituted for the rose hip to avoid the slight tanning properties? I am very fair skinned and wear no make up, therefore, i am nervous that it would end up being quite noticable over time. Thank you for your informative site!
Author
Hi Teresa, you could replace it but safflower oil does not have the same properties as rosehip oil. Rosehip oil is really good for wrinkles and has vitamin A and retinol.
Safflower does have conjugated linoleic acid which helps with skin renewal but I don’t think it has natural retinol, correct me if I am wrong.
In any case, its still a good oil to use on the face since its dry and absorbs well, just make sure its organic.
Hi Eve, beautiful you and very useful info on EOs. Pls guide me on my antiaging serum, that I have recently started using before coming to your website. I am using following recipe:
Rosehip oil: 20 ml
Avacado oil: 10 ml
Geranium EO: 6 drops
Frankincense EO: 6 drops
Carrot seed EO: 6 drops
I also add Vit E 5 capsules.
Pls tell me is this ratio and mix of oils appropriate? I have started using since 2 weeks so I cannot see result early but my skin is now no more dry or pimple ridden.
I have a very sensitive and combination skin. So there is this positive effect though. But I want to be sure about anti wrinkle effect too. Pls guide me
Author
Hi arshi, you can just just rosehip oil on its own. I think its a bit more effective than avocado oil.
So:
Rosehip oil: 30 ml
Geranium EO: 4 drops
Frankincense EO: 4 drops
Carrot seed EO: 4 drops
Vit E 1 capsules.(optional)
So glad to hear its healing your face with no more dryness nor acne, that’s a big win!!
For wrinkles, you have to keep using it for at least 2 months, its slow but does help – stick to it!!
Thank you so much Eve. I had been waiting patiently for your reply. Yes I will keep this in my routine skin care. I love you a lot because not only your all articles on DIY Serums and oils are very knowledgeable but these are very useful also _/\_
Pls accept my heartiest blessings
Author
thank you Arshi 🙂
Dear Eva, this month, I added 3 drops of Frankincense EO, 2 drops of Geranium and Carrot seed EOs in 5 ml Rosehip oil as my rosehip oil is finished now and very less quantity.
I applying I found that whenever I apply this oil,my cheeks and forehead are burning with red small spots and i feel hotness all the time.
Also the smell is very strong.
Pls suggest. Is this because of high concentration of EOs or is this normal to have these spots and hot feeling? Pls guide.
Author
Its not normal to have spots and burning sensation, you may be allergic to the rosehip oil, if so do a patch test without the essential oil to test. in any case, you have too much essential oils in your 5 ml as it should be 2% dilution and 12 drops in 30 ml not 5 ml. Please be very careful of having the right dilution or it may burn your skin.
Hi how about econatia for face?
Author
Hi renee, you mean echinacea? yes its beneficial for skin but you would need to use the tincture in tiny amount in the serum as it contains alcohol, never tried myself so use with caution and always do a patch test.
Hye Eve…im newbie in this essential oil thing..can u help me..i got lavender and helichrysum essential oil with rosehip carrier oil..would that can be used for my serum oil…do i need to put the moisturiser after i put this oil..
Author
Hi nurmi, you need to mix the essential oils with the rosehip carrier oil so for 30 mil a max of 12 drops for 2% dilution.
The oil blend is the moisturizer, no need to put another moisturizer after?
Wonderful..i will proceed with that..Thanks for your reply…another question,i got redness in my cheeks and open pores and a few scars..do you have a recipe for that problems…thanks again Eve..
Author
Hi Nurmi, I would do a patch test with the rosehip oil by itself, wait for 24 h and then apply to your oil face if no reaction.
then do another patch test with the rosehip oil and the essential oil blended. if no reaction after 24h then apply to your whole face. Better safe than sorry!
Okey..thanks a lot for the advice Eve…
hey, i’m new to this. I never tried essential oils. I just bought some of those from whole foods:
Rose
Sandalwood
Lemongrass
Lemon
Orange
Carrot seed
Geranium
Bergamont
Frankincense
Lavender
Ylang ylang
Can you help me to find best recipe with these oils. I want to use sweet almond oil as carrier oil. I have pores, blemishes on my skin. I also want to brighten my skin. I searched on google and i found above oils are best for these. Please share some recipe with these. Let me know if i need something else or these are fine.
Author
Hi simar, is that for your face?
You should NOT use, lemon, lemongrass, orange, bergamot on your face as some are phototoxic and can burn.
I would blend 2 drops of each rose, sandalwood, carrot seed, geranium, frankincense, lavender and ylang-ylang essential oils.
Make a 2% dilution is to add 12 drops of essential oil to each fl. ounce (30 ml) of cold-pressed carrier oil.
For the oil I would use camellia seed oil and not sweet almond as its too greasy. personal preference!
Hi. Just to clarify. for a 30ml carrier oil is to add 12drops of each essential oils or 2 drops x 6 types essential oil.thank you
Author
Maximum 12 drops of ALL essential oils blended for 30ml. That’s a 2% dilution.
hi Eve, just checking but in your recipe, the total essential oils come to 15 drops in your 30ml carrier oil. further on you say to only use 12 drops as this is 2%. which one is correct, the 12 or 15 drops?
I love this serum and normally mix it with frank and rose geranium for my 57 year old dryish skin.
Author
Hi jo, 2% dilution in 30 ml is 12 drops of essential oils, this is correct. If you put 15 its not the end of the world but I would not go above that.
Hi Eve,
I’m new at natural products. So far I’ve made a coconut lavender body whipped cream and love it!
I’ve been looking for a good recipe for face serum and I’m going to give yours a try! I hope it helps with fine lines.
Thank you for sharing!
Author
welcome claudia 🙂
Hello, From what I have learned, it is very dangerous to use UNDILUTED essential oils on the skin, it can cause allergy, which cannot be turned back. Please look further into this, so you don’t do harm with your otherwise very nice recipe!
Author
Hi Olivia, yes you should not use essential oil undiluted unless its lavender essential oil. Did you read the recipe? the essential oils are diluted with rosehip oil and not used pure.
Old people on Croatian islands use undiluted rosemary eo for open wounds to stop the bleeding.
Hi. , does it cause tanning, cause I want to remove pigmentation not cause tanning
Author
yes, rosehip oil contains beta caroten so it will have a natural glow/tanned but its very discreet.
Hi Eve,have just come across your website and I am very impressed. I have just started using natural products, mainly face oils and I am looking to expand my interest further.
I love all the links you out in, they are very helpful.
Thank you,
Barbara

Thank you Barbara 🙂 – spread the love!
Hi Eve. I want to know if you are using oil for the whole body what % dilution should i use when I’m using 100ml pump bottle. How many drops of all the EOs i will be using do i need and how many table spoon or drops of all the COs i will be using do i need?
For the face serum recipe you have listed, i will be using 50ml pump bottle so hope i will use same measurement listed.
Author
I would not use rosehip oil for the whole body as it expensive.
Where do I get all those ingredients in Nigeria because they are not common here.
Author
Hi faith, have you tried amazon??
Eve, I am very new at this. So far I have made Lip Balm only. But want to venture on to more. I love your Website. I plan on trying the DIY Face Serum
at my young age of 78 I can use some treatment on
my face. This sounded gret. I am also going to try
the Body Butter. I have always put crams on my body but this Recipe for the “Coconut Oil Body Butter” Sounds wonderful.
Author
that’s awesome! let me know how it goes Paula 🙂
ok sister… thank you so much… please let me know when e-books ready
thank you so much for your reply sister… you have any e-book for these all recipes to purchase?
Author
HI Indira! you are very welcome, I don’t have an e-book yet, I’ve been wanting to do this for year but need to make the time for it! Subscribe to my newsletter so you can find out when its ready 🙂
Hi I love reading your site and the recipes. can i use argan oil instead of rosehip in this recipe?
Author
Hi Nina, thanks for the kind words! yes you can use argan oil but this changes the recipe entirely. What I would do is do 2/3 rosehip oil and 1/3 argan oil. Hope this helps 🙂
hai… I liked all your receipes and they are interested too…but I had a doubt… is face serum, lip balm, soaps, body lotion every thing can be used by pregnant woman also or can skip in pregnancy? once again thank you for your recipes!
Author
I would avoid the use of essential oils if you are pregnant. Any of the natural products like face serum, soap and body lotion can use if you are pregnant.
Hi Eve, I would like to make my own face serum. But I don’t like the smell of roses. How strong is rosehip oil? I am afraid it would bother my nose. I guess I could just try it and see.
Thanks for your help.
Lori
Author
Hi Lori, the rosehip oil does not smell like roses. If you don’t like rose scent, skip the geranium essential oil.
One ounce equals two tablespoons not four Tbsp so should I halve the rest of the recipe? That would be difficult with half of five drops for essential oils–two versus three drops, that is the question.
Author
you’re right, its two tablespoons = 30 ml, I’ve updated the recipe.
I made this recipe with a couple of substitutions. I added a little Argan oil as part of the base. I really like the feel of this serum–it soaks in fast but you don’t feel a heavy layer of top of your skin.
Author
Awesome Dee, the best part of making your own DIy beauty recipes is that you customize it as you wish.
the rosehip oil is considered as carrier oil? or we need to add a carrier oil too?
Author
Hi Shirin, The rosehip oil is the carrier oil, no need to add anything!
Could I use actual roses instead of the oil
Author
Hi Shalini, its really difficult to make essential oil without the proper machine so using rose petals will not work as well.
I love reading your posts. I do have a question about the above recipe. You mentioned sandalwood in the bio part but I did not notice it in the recipe portion. Does this mean it is optional and if so how much would you use? I hope you and kitty have a great day
Author
Hi Sarah, thanks for your kind words! You are right, I forgot to add the sandalwood, its updated now 🙂
Sandalwood essential oil is expensive so its optional here. have a great day as well!
Can the face serum be used all over my body.can I be using the serum as body and face serum only without using cream.reply urgently
Author
Because rosehip oil is expensive, its best to use only on your face.
Such a great website. How long do these serums last?
Author
Thanks Cindy! at least a year, depending on the shelf life of your carrier oil.
