After a lot of trial and error, I created this amazing vegan DIY matte lipstick which will surely become your makeup staple. This homemade lipstick has a nude color with a matte effect, that is achieved with the use of zinc oxide and rice flour. My matte lipstick recipe is a base that can be customized to your liking. It is vegan since I do not use beeswax.
Customizing your own lipstick color and shade is half the fun if you ask me! You can create a color that is 100% unique and according to your own taste. That’s what I love about homemade lipsticks. This recipe is a little advanced because of the use of the mold, which can be tricky. It does also requires more ingredients than my usual DIY recipes. Ensure you have made a lip balm recipe before tackling this lipstick recipe.
The spring 2019 runways showed bronzed cheeked and beautiful shades of natural and pretty pastels. I am not going to mention the golden glitters and metallic foiled lips because I am not sure who would dare to wear those, sadly!
I personally love the nude, pastel pinks colors that look natural.

Why a matte lipstick?
Matte lipsticks are perfect for everyday wear and add a certain amount of sophistication to your look without being over the top. They appear more natural and complement all skin tones. Common matte lipstick colors are a pinkish fan, nude berry, pink honey, tonal and tawny nude.
You can accentuate your natural lip color easily with a matte lipstick, or you can create an interesting cosmetic palette by using your homemade matte lipstick to only subtly differentiate your lip color from your skin color, creating the perfect nude effect.
Why make your own lipstick?
Like any topical cosmetic or skincare product, switching to toxin-free lipstick is an important step to prevent chemicals from entering your bloodstream through your skin or mouth.
A natural lipstick recipe is especially important because chemicals from lipstick are also ingested as well as absorbed through the skin! If you follow my DIY matte lipstick recipe below, it’s easy to make your own homemade matte or nude lipstick.
The chemical compounds in lipstick are absorbed both through the skin of the lips and are ingested as you lick your lips and parts of lipstick wear off in such close proximity to your mouth! Conventional lipsticks, in particular, tend to be high in toxic chemicals in order to achieve a long-lasting color.
Dangerous ingredients to avoid in commercial lipsticks
Phthalates – These compounds mimic human hormones and disrupt the endocrine system. Some phthalates have also been associated with liver cancer in mice and may be potentially carcinogenic to humans as well. You may not see them listed directly on your conventional lipstick since they are often disguised under the ingredient term “fragrance”.
Lead – Lead is one of the most common offenders in conventional lipstick. It is a proven neurotoxin, and has been linked to miscarriages and infertility.
Quaternium-15 – This compound is most commonly used as a preservative in makeup such as lipsticks and mascaras, but it releases formaldehyde gas, a known carcinogen, when it breaks down. Other formaldehyde-releasing preservatives used in makeup include: quaternium-18, quaternium-26, bronopol, and methenamamine.
PEG Compounds – PEG stands for polyethylene glycols, compounds that contain ethylene oxide, a known carcinogen. Ethylene glycol and other PEG compounds also make it easier for other toxins to traverse the skin and enter the bloodstream.
Butylated Compounds – Butylated Compounds include BHT and BHA, preservatives used in both food and cosmetics. These compounds are endocrine disruptors linked to reproductive issues and infertility, and may also cause skin irritation and organ toxicity.
Parabens – These compounds are known as hormone disruptors that have also been found in breast cancer tissue. Parabens also interfere with the immune system and nervous system, which is why they have received quite a lot of bad press in recent years!
If you are currently wearing a matte lipstick that is commercially made, even if it claims to be natural, make sure to reach the list of ingredients and check the brand on Skin deep.
They will rate the toxicity of your lipstick from 0 to 10,10 score being the highest toxicity.

Making your own DIY matte lipstick ensures that you can avoid all of these toxic chemicals. A homemade matte lipstick recipe also gives you the opportunity to create a custom color, or to select blends for your preferred texture, and custom color equals fun if you ask me!
Ingredients of my DIY matte lipstick recipe
Instead of the toxic compounds listed above, I use the following to make my DIY matte lipstick:
Jojoba oil – Created from the seed of the jojoba plant, jojoba oil has antibacterial properties, and has a naturally high content of Vitamins A and E. This makes it a great choice to nourish the lips! You can replace with sunflower oil or camelia seed oil.
Candelilla wax – Candelilla wax is a vegan alternative to beeswax, derived from the candelilla shrub. Candelilla is rich in nutrients. Like beeswax helps to provide a protective barrier for the skin to help prevent moisture loss.
Mica – Mica is a naturally occurring mineral, used in powder form in most cosmetics to thicken the end product and to produce a natural and subtle shimmer. Mica can also be used to infuse color into the lipstick.
Zinc oxyde– it is a white powder that is used in natural sunscreens. It can also heal chapped lips and has some antiseptic properties. It will give a matte effect to your lipstick.
Oryza sativa flour – This is the fancy name for rice flour. It will help to have a matte effect.
Ingredients
- 1/4 teaspoon honey beige or bronze mica Try to get a mica that is not too shimmery to accentuate the matte liptick effect.
- 1/4 teaspoon zync oxyde
- 1/2 teaspoon rice flour oriza sativa flour
- 1/2 teaspoon camelia seed oil
- 1 teaspoon rice bran wax
- 1 teaspoon Carnauba wax
- 1 teaspoon candelilla wax
- 5 teaspoons refine shea butter
- 7 teaspoons sunflower oil or jojoba oil or camelia seed oil
- 1 silicon mold for lipstick you can get this one from Aroma Zone (French company so keep in mind you will have to pay import custom fees if you don’t live in France. )or try to the one I found on amazon.com
- 3 Lipstick tubes – If using an old lipstick container one make sure it is clean, dried and sterilized.
- 3 drops peppermint essential oil
Instructions
- First, combine the mica, oil, zinc oxide, and colorant to make your desired color while slowly incorporating the zinc oxide and rice flour to make the shade you prefer.
- Ensure there are no lumps and the powder is well dissolved with the oil.
- Melt the butter and waxes in a double boiler on low heat until melted.
- Add the colored oil mixture, mix well until melted.
- Add the essential oil if desired. Mix well.
- Pour in the empty lipstick tube as explained in the tutorial below.
- Put in the freezer for 15 minutes.
- Unmold slowly as per instructions below. Use within one year.
STEP BY STEP HOW TO USE THE LIPSTICK SILICON MOLD
- Remove the cover and the base of the lipstick container
- Turn the bottom white part of the mechanism to the maximum in order to have the transparent inner part up.
- Clip the transparent inner part in the lipstick mold
- Put the lipstick mold upside down on a table and start pouring through the bottom of the body of the empty case.
- Pour the melted lipstick mixture quickly inside the lipstick container.
- Try not to exceed the little white gate.
- Place the entire (+ mold body of the case) 15 minutes in the freezer in the same position as casting.
- To unmold, put the lipstick upright and unmold gently the silicon mold.
- Turn the mechanism to retract the lipstick stick inside the body of the container, then put the base and the cover.
- Clean the silicon mold with warm water and soap. Let dry before you use again.

Question: Oil is listed twice in the ingredients, but only once in the instructions. When you add the camellia seed oil in Step 1, are you adding a 1/2 teaspoon, or 7? If it’s only 1/2, when do you add the other 7 teaspoons of oil? I apologize if I missed something. Thanks!
