I have formulated 3 amazing 100% natural homemade face serumrecipes that are easy to make and can also be customized to your skin type. My DIY face serums that are suitable for all skin types, dry, oily, normal and mature skin. The common ingredient in all my recipes is jojoba oil. These homemade face serums are cheaper when compared to the store-bought expensive serums and skin transformation creams. Because you can buy these oils wholesale online, they will cost you a fraction of the cost.
It is really simple and easy… All you need to do is combine a blend of essential oils and a carrier oil!
You need to make your choice carefully when it comes to essential oils and also carrier oils because each oil has different characteristics and accompany different benefits for your skin. Remember to NEVER use undiluted essential oils on your skin as it can burn and irritates it.
Is it Safe to Use Oil on My Face?
Advertising has made homemade recipes look bad while all commercial and synthetic formulas are shown as the best choice. Against all marketing tactics that scare you to use an oil-based formula on your face, you can rest assured that this DIY face serum has amazing benefits for your skin, as long as you use the right carrier oil.
Which Carrier Oils Should I Avoid Using on My Face?
All of the carrier oils mentioned below are comedogenic, and hence, are not suitable for acne-prone skin:
Coconut Oil – It tends to clog pores and makes the skin look even more oily – making it almost impossible to ignore!
Flax Seed Oil – It is not harsh on the skin, but it needs to be mixed with a lightweight moisturizer before applying it on the skin.
Marula Oil – It contains a high content of capric acid, which can clog pores.
Red Palm Oil – This also contains a high content of capric acid, leading to clogged pores.
Soy Bean Oil – Soy Bean oil is heavy and has a high comedogenic rating and can be a nightmare for acne prone skin.
Wheat Germ Oil – It contains ingredients that can irritate the skin causing it to produce more oil, resulting in acne.
What does comedogenic mean?
Comedogenic literally means “tending to cause blackheads by blocking the pores of the skin.” Therefore, it is always recommended to go for carrier oils that are labeled as non-comedogenic. I will give you a few options below!
Face Serum Ingredients for Oily Skin and Their Benefits
Jojoba Oil – Helps moisturize your skin and regulates oil production. It contains sebum that oily skin generates naturally, but Jojoba tricks the skin into believing that it has produced enough, hence regulating oil secretion.
Grapeseed Oil – The high linoleic acid content helps reduce clogged pores, and ultimately reduces the natural oil content. It also balances both, the oily and dry skin patches.
Patchouli Essential Oil – It possesses amazing acne treating and oil-balancing properties. It also helps reduce scars, which may appear overtime due to clogged pores.
Lavender Essential Oil – Its anti-inflammatory and healing properties help in toning the skin and treating acne. It also helps reduce excessive oil secretion.
Face Serum Ingredients for Dry Skin and Their Benefits
Jojoba Oil – Helps moisturize the skin and reduces dry patches. It contains sebum that oily skin generates naturally, hence lubricating dry skin.
Argan Oil – The high fatty acid and vitamin E content boosts hydration and softens dry skin.
Essential oil blend for dry skin
Palmarosa Essential Oil – In addition to being an aromatic substitute like Germanium oil, it helps balance dry skin and is suited for all skin types. It also helps prevent inflammation and acne breakouts.
Roman Or German Chamomile Essential Oil – It helps soothe dry, itchy and red patches and also calms irritated skin. It also helps with other skin conditions caused due to dryness.
Lavender Essential Oil – It helps cleanse your skin, and when mixed with other oils, it helps smooth out dry patches, lubricating them. It also helps treat psoriasis.
The recipe below is what I use daily and my skin loves it!
Jojoba Oil – Helps moisturize the skin and regulates oil production. It contains sebum that oily skin generates naturally, and therefore perfectly complements normal skin texture.
Rosehip Oil – It contains plenty of fatty acids and linoleic acid. Therefore, it becomes the perfect addition to your skincare regimen. It also has plenty of antioxidants that rejuvenate the skin, and is also easily absorbed.
Essential oil blend for normal and mature skin
Rose Geranium Essential Oil – Not just for oily skin, Rose Geranium oil helps unclog pores to avoid occasional acne breakouts. It also helps smoothen and even out your skin tone.
Lavender Essential Oil – This oil, with floral fragrance, is known for reducing skin redness and irritation, restoring the skin’s natural suppleness. It also helps calm the skin.
Frankincense Essential Oil – This oil is majorly used in aromatherapy and is known to improve the texture of your skin. It also helps reduce swelling and inflammation.

Hello, I have been looking for a serum for my skin. I have been researching and came across your page! So my skin is normally dry in the winter and oily in the summer, which serum do you recommend I try?
Hi Dominique, glad you found me! You can cater to your skin needs depending on the season, jojoba oil is a favorite of mine, so use the "Homemade face serum for normal and mature skin" but skip the rosehip oil.
Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful recipe, Im looking forward to trying it. Can I use patchouli and carrot seed oils? Instead of the rose geranium and lavender (in the normal to mature skin recipe)?
definitely as long as it the same amount and you are replacing the essential oils! have fun michelle!
hi can i use just one essential oil in the serum of oily skin ? i just could find lavender oil .
yes! lavender essential oil is great :-)
Can these recipes be used without essential oils?
defenitely!
Hello, can I use only one carrier oil and I essential oil for my serum?
I made the normal/mature serum for myself and my daughter and we love it! it smells amazing and feels so good! i've only used it for two days and I think I can already feel how happy my skin is with this serum! thanks so much.
An update: After about 6 weeks of using this face serum (following your instructions for washing my face with water, rose hydrosol, and then applying the serum), my skin is noticeably improved! The stubborn patch of dry skin I've had on my chin for a year is gone, my acne/ingrown hair scars are healing, my skin tone is not red or inflamed anymore, and I haven't had a single ingrown hair! I've struggled with ingrown hairs on my chin for years. My facial skin is looking calm, healthy, and moisturized. Thank you so much for your informative blog, simple recipes, and lack of unnecessary additives in your recipes. So much appreciated!
so awesome Teresa, thanks for sharing!
hello Please help me. I'm 60 years old. I have dry skin on my cheek. I have wrinkles and I have sagging skin. Years appropriate. What kind of cream and serum should I do to reduce my wrinkles and tighten my skin on my face. thanks , Karmen
I have brown spots I would like to get rid of as well as precancerous spots on my face which usually get burned off at the dermatologist. Could I add white willow bark extract to the above formula for night time use? Anything else you would recommend to diminish brown spots? Maybe Calendula extract?
