How to Get Rid of Dandruff Naturally?

When the seasons change, our scalp can become dry, itchy and flaky. This easy, DIY and all-natural recipe will work wonders on those nasty flakes. Dandruff is not always easy to get rid of but with two to three applications of this homemade recipe, you will be surprised!

Using coconut oil for dandruff is a much better alternative to conventional anti-dandruff shampoos that contain harsh compounds and synthetic chemicals that can dry and irritate your scalp. These include:

Zinc Pyrithione is the primary active ingredient in most anti-dandruff shampoos. Many people have an irritation reaction to this compound.

Coal Tar is a known carcinogen found in many conventional anti-dandruff shampoos.

Resorcinol is another chemical compound common in anti-dandruff shampoos that is an irritant.

In addition to these active ingredients, conventional shampoos contain other harmful compounds in the form of foaming agents, perfumes and dyes. Avoid them all with this recipe for a natural oil for dandruff!

The origin of dandruff

The origin of dandruff is not well known, but it is often associated with a fungus called malassezia or pityrosporum. This fungus normally exists on the scalp without causing problems, but it can overgrow due to stress, poor diet or hormone imbalances. Bacterial and fungal build up leads to itchiness, irritation and flaking. In extreme cases, the flaking may even be accompanied by some bleeding.

Diet plays an important role because different types of fungus and yeast, which also can cause dandruff, feed off of sugar and starches. If you are experiencing dandruff, reduce your intake of sugar, refined carbohydrates and alcohol. Instead focus on getting plenty of nutritious whole foods. Think of this as prevention as well as a cure!

How to Get Rid of Dandruff Naturally – Key Ingredients

Unrefined coconut oil is made from dried coconut kernels. It’s perfect for an anti-dandruff treatment because it is naturally antiseptic as well as antifungal, and contains plenty of nourishing fatty acids to help soothe your scalp and keep it hydrated. As a bonus, coconut oil will hydrate your hair, making it soft and shiny. It’s important to buy unrefined coconut oil as it will be the most intact and have the most medicinal properties.

Tea tree oil is an essential oil distilled from the tea tree plant, originally native to Australia. It is also a naturally antiseptic and antifungal, helping it to combat dandruff. It also has a pleasant, refreshing scent. When purchasing tea tree oil, check the label to make sure you are buying a 100% tea tree oil product. Buy organic whenever possible to eliminate trace chemicals and contaminants.

Both ingredients cleanse the scalp and help to reduce bacterial and fungal growth, and the coconut oil soothes and nourishes the scalp, while the tea tree oil additionally lowers inflammation.
