Forget about your pricey high-end face scrubs full of chemicals,  I’m going to teach how to make an easy face scrub with apricot kernel powder at home. Apricot kernel powder is such a perfect ingredient because of its amazing benefits on the skin. I’ve also used maple syrup and rhassoul clay (Morrocan clay) to draw the impurities out of your face.  It is suitable for sensitive skins, oily skins and of course normal skins. So the recipe I have created will allow you to make a DIY face scrub in minutes without breaking the bank and without the use of harmful chemicals.

There are many different ways to make a face scrub, but this DIY apricot kernel face scrub is as simple as can be.

Apricot Kernel Powder as an Exfoliant

Apricot Kernel Powder is made by sifting and grinding dried apricot kernels until they are finely ground. This powder is often used for beauty products, particularly skincare products because of its ability to cause gentle abrasion that’s great for exfoliation.  This exfoliant effectively and gently removes damaged skin cells to promote the growth of new ones.

How to grind apricot kernels

You can grind apricot kernels into powder with a fast blender like ninja or even better Vitamix blender. The important thing is that you need blades that are thick and sturdy so you can grind hard beans or hard nuts.

IMPORTANT: Do not grind the actual apricot seeds that are inside the kernels as they contain cyanide. You should avoid ingesting apricot seeds as they have been reports of poisoning. You can read more about this topic here.

Rhassoul clay to draws out impurities

A natural mineral clay, the Rhassoul clay can only be sourced from Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. It has long been used for hair and skin, mainly because of its ability to take out impurities. It’s a great ingredient for shampoos, skin conditioners and soaps, plus other therapeutic products currently used by spas and salons. Aside from removing impurities, Rhassoul clay can also be used for deep cleansing, exfoliation, preventing oily skin, soothing irritated skin, and tightening large pores.

Maple syrup to heal your skin

Maple syrup is a well-known substance that is produced by the maple trees. To be exact, the maple trees produce maple water, that is then boiled for  3 days so it can turn into a syrop. You should have seen the look on my face when I visited an organic maple syrup farm and saw water (and not syrup) coming out of the maple tree! I guess one is never too old to learn! It has natural healing properties, and the ability to moisturize, cause scar fading and treat acne.  Always choose organic maple syrup and it needs to be 100% pure!

As an alternative, you could also use liquid honey, but I find it is not as easy to mix together with the clay. Honey is often added to cosmetics products because it is also antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic.  I prefer to use liquid honey so it’s easy to apply on the skin.

Agave syrup would also work as another vegan alternative for this homemade face scrub mask.

The recipe I have created will allow you to make a DIY face scrub in minutes without breaking the bank and without the use of harmful chemicals.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Start by grinding the apricot kernels in a fast blender if you bought the actual apricot kernel. You need to reduce it to a fine powder. I suggest you use a Vitamix or a ninja blender. It needs to be powerful enough to grind really hard nuts! If you managed to find apricot kernel powder, then of course not need to grind it!
  • Mix all the ingredients into a small bowl until they are well integrated. You may opt to whisk them, but just folding them in with a spatula will do.
  • Apply directly to the face and massage gently for a few minutes in small circular motions.
  • Rinse well with lukewarm water and apply your daily moisturizer.
  • You may store the leftovers in a small container for a few weeks as long as there is no contamination with water.
  • Sift the apricot kernel powder with a sieve.

Apricot kernel scrub benefits for the face

The benefits of the apricot kernel scrub for the face include the reduction of wrinkles, sustained moisture supply, amazing skin tone, and effective removal of dead skin cells for smoother and softer skin.

How often can you use this DIY apricot kernel face scrub?

Remember that this homemade face scrub shouldn’t be used for more than once a week. Exfoliation should be done sparingly, especially because you wouldn’t want to disturb the sebum balance in your face that may cause unwanted breakouts or skin irritation.

How to remove blackheads and why they appear?

When there’s an imbalance on the sebum levels in your face, it can lead to clogging of pores and eventually, blackheads. To prevent the buildup of sebum that causes blackheads, make sure to properly wash your face daily with hydrosol and cotton pads and exfoliate every once in a while.  Exfoliation helps in removing dead skin cells and sebum makeup, but make sure that you do it in moderation or it will cause irritation or worse skin conditions.
