An essential oil spray is one of the safest (and easiest!) ways to use essential oils to revitalize your living space and enjoy the numerous health benefits that they have to offer. I will show you how to make an essential oil spray in 3 different ways and recipes, one essential oil spray for deep sleep with lavender, chamomile and valerian essential oil, one for deodorizing the bathroom, and another one to make your home smell like a spa and feel zen!
Benefits of aromatherapy and essential oils
A popular treatment that dates way back to the 11th century, essential oils are one of nature’s biggest gifts to humanity. Aromatherapy is an alternative medicine practice that makes use of essential oils to treat different ailments, both physical and psychological.
Apart from their pleasant fragrances, here are some of the ailments essential oils are known to help to cure:
Stress and depression
Digestion issues
Pain
Insomnia
Boosting energy levels
Accelerating healing
Dangers of commercial chemical fragrances like Febreeze
Fragrances: Brands aren’t obligated to disclose the ingredients used in fragrances, so a lot of the used components might cause skin irritation/allergies/damage, acute aquatic toxicity, respiratory effects, biodegradation.
SODIUM POLYACRYLATE: This can cause acute aquatic toxicity, general systemic/organ effects, skin irritation/allergies/damage, respiratory effects, damage to vision.
DEODORIZING AGENT: The ingredients used in these can cause skin irritation/allergies/damage, and adverse developmental, endocrine, and reproductive effects.
DIALKYL SULFOSUCCINATES: This can cause adverse developmental, endocrine, reproductive effects, damage to vision, general systemic/organ effects, skin irritation/allergies/damage, and biodegradation.
BENZISOTHIAZOLINONE: This can cause skin irritation/allergies/damage, and adverse developmental, endocrine, and reproductive effects along with biodegradation
Yes, you can but only as long as it’s a glass bottle, NOT a plastic one. Most essential oils, even diluted ones, contain properties that cause them to eat through the plastic or cause corrosion by reacting with them, which can destroy your essential oil blend and cause leakages.

How to make essential oils spray without alcohol
If you can’t use alcohol in your recipe for any reason, you can substitute it with either of the following:
Witch hazel Distilled from the leaves, twigs and bark of the witch hazel plant, witch hazel is a useful remedy against acne, fighting inflammation, infection and protecting against skin damage, to name only a few.
Any hydrosol or flower water: While hydrosols are liquids derived from the distillation of aromatherapy plants and flower water comes from submerging flowers in water, both serve the same purpose here. Perfect for those with sensitive skin, this help soothe and nourish the skin.
How to make essential oils spray last longer
In terms of shelf life, your essential oil spray will last about 3 to 6 months, depending on whether you are using hydrosol or witch hazel. To make the smell last longer, you need to ensure that you add a base note to your essential oil blend. Examples of base notes are frankincense essential oil, cedarwood, clove, balsam Peru, vanilla, patchouli, vetiver, etc.
