How To Make Face Cream

What is the best homemade face moisturizer?

The one that you make with love and affection with all-natural ingredients.

But no seriously, nothing can beat a homemade face moisturizer with 100% organic and natural ingredients. Once you have learned how to make face cream, it will give you the liberty to customize and add the ingredients that you know your skin will react well to.

It’s important to choose oils that suit your skin type, for example:

  • For dry skin: avocado oil, evening primrose oil
  • For oily skin: grapeseed oil, jojoba oil
  • For sensitive skin: jojoba oil
  • For normal skin: almond oil, sunflower oil
  • For skin with acne: jojoba oil, tamanu oil
  • For mature skin: rosehip oil, argon oil

What is the difference between white and yellow beeswax?

White beeswax is naturally pressure-filtered and pure.

Yellow beeswax is refined and has been heated to filter out debris. It also will affect the color of your face cream.

I’ve decided to use white beeswax for this recipe to have a white cream but this is totally up to you and you can use yellow beeswax instead.

How to use camellia seed oil?

Camellia Seed Oil is increasingly becoming popular as a natural moisturizer. It is rich in Vitamin A and fatty-acids, and shows promising results in nourishing the skin with sufficient moisture. It is also non-comedogenic in nature, so it does a pretty good job at hydrating the skin without encouraging clogged pores and breakouts. Like jojoba oil, the composition of camellia seed oil is similar to the oil naturally produced by our skin (sebum), which makes it safe to use in serums and creams. You can also use it on its own.

Can you put beeswax on your face?

Yes! Beeswax is rich in Vitamin E, and has antiseptic and healing properties, which makes it great for treating acne, as well as keeping it at bay. It also gently works on softening and smoothing the skin by keeping it moisturized and nourished.

How To Make Face Cream with beeswaxDo I need to add a preservative in my homemade face cream?

Preservatives are added when there is water content present in a mixture, to prevent spoilage. In this case, the face cream consists of hydrosol, which has water content. Therefore, we’ve included grapefruit seed extract in the recipe, as it’s a natural preservative.

Always make sure to apply the face cream with clean hands or a spoon.

What can you substitute orange blossom water with?

You can use any other hydrosol like lavender or rose hydrosol if you don’t want to use orange blossom water. You can also use Aloe Vera juice, as it’s a great substitute.

What are the benefits of Aloe Vera on skin?

Aloe Vera is amazing for your skin. It is probably one of the most widely used herbal remedies for topical skin conditions.

Aloe Vera is rich in vitamins, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that can do wonders to your skin. It is known to fight acne, heal dark spots and can even slow down the signs of aging. Not only this, it feels AMAZING. It’s smooth, gel-like texture leaves your skin feeling rejuvenated and moisturized.

How To Make Face Cream with essential oils

Based on your skin condition, which essential oil can be used in this Homemade Face Cream?

This is very important. You need to make sure that the essential oil you opt to include in your face cream is compatible with your skin type.

I’ve listed a few essential oils that can be used, based on different skin types.

  • OILY SKIN

Frankincense Essential Oil: It’s a natural astringent and regulates sebum production, reducing the greasy, hot mess look on your skin.

Geranium Essential Oil: It also regulates sebum production, whilst healing acne scars and tightening the skin.

  • DRY SKIN

Rose Otto Essential Oil: Its gentle energizing properties help the skin stay soft, smooth and hydrated.
Jasmine Essential Oil: Its healing and relaxing properties make it great to aid the treatment of dry and irritated skin.

  • SENSITIVE SKIN
Chamomile Essential Oil: We all know chamomile tea helps us relax during stressful times. In the same way, chamomile essential oil is perfect to calm irritated skin.
Lavender Essential Oil: Rich in antifungal properties, lavender essential oil helps gently cleanse your skin and lessen redness and irritation.

  • ACNE-PRONE SKIN
    Tee Tree Essential Oil:
This is one of the most effective herbal treatments for acne. Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties help dry out pimples, reduce swelling and inflammation.

  • MATURE SKIN

Helichrysum Essential Oil: Some people refer to this as the “Immortal Flower”. It promotes cell rejuvenation, reduces wrinkles and age spots, and gives your skin a youthful glow.

Carrot Seed Essential Oil: It helps repairs skin damage, tones muscle and tissue, and tightens the skin to prevent it from sagging.

Can you use citric acid as the preservative instead of grapefruit seed extract since it has anti aging benefits. If so, how much?

SO excited to make this. I wasn’t able to find German chamomile. I did find wild chamomile, would that be ok? Also, I found Helichrysum hydrosol can I use that instead of or split the amount with another hydrosol? I’m new at this. I’m using some of my beeswax and thought this would be a fun project. Thank you!

You can totally use wild chamomile essential oil instead of german chamomile. You can substitute any hydrosol that is suitable to use on the skin, Helichrysum is great!
As long as you keep the same proportion, it will work just fine!
      Have fun 🙂

Hello. This looks like a lovely recipe for a DIY cream! Definitely looking forward to try it. I do have a question about the grape seed extract as natural preservative. I have read that grape seed extract is not a preservative but an antioxidant (which prevents oils from going rancid). How do you know if grape seed extract is enough to preserve this cream?, which has water. Thank you!

Can you not use the hydrosol and the extract? Will it be the same ?

    • September 12, 2020 / 1:34 pm

The extract is much more concentrated than the hydrosol, so you definitely should not use the same amount.

Hi Eve, I am in love with all your post, I hope to launch my own cosmetic line. Is zinc oxide safe to add to face cream moisturizer for sun protection.
    Thanks

    • June 24, 2020 / 9:31 pm

Hi Loida, As a food additive, zinc oxide is on the U.S. FDA’s list as ‘generally recognized as safe’. But because there are very limited studies on its safety, I would never use zinc oxide or Titanium Dioxide in any other cream than for the occasional sunscreen.
