Whether you’re struggling with thinning hair, damaged hair, hair loss, or receding hair, castor oil will be your best friend through it all. I will show you how to use castor oil for hair growth and how to get long healthy and strong hair. While super effective, using castor oil can be a little tricky to use because it is sticky, greasy and things can get messy. Keep reading to find out the best way to use castor oil for beautiful and long hair.
Castor oil is actually an age-old remedy. Also known as ricinus communis, castor oil is sourced from the castor bean and is rich in ricinoleic acid, a type of fatty acid. This fatty acid provides the nutrients and proteins needed to strengthen the hair follicles and prevent hair follicle inflammation. It also increases the shine of the hair and increases hair shaft flexibility by coating the hair shaft.
As far as the benefits go, castor oil provides an abundance of them to your hair. It’s even said to perform better than commercial serums. So not only does it protect your hair from the cocktail of chemicals in commercial products, but it also makes for a very affordable stimulant for hair growth.
As with any natural remedy, you have to be patient. However, with regular use, castor oil is known to show results as early as 1-3 months. Over the course of a few weeks, you’ll definitely be able to see significant strength in the overall health of your hair. Some mention this speed up hair growth up to 3 times!
Since castor oil has a thick and greasy consistency, it’s recommended to apply it overnight, so you can reap the most of its benefits. If you can’t manage that, make sure to apply it at least an hour before you have to shampoo.
With castor oil, less is more is always the way to go. Only take out a pea-sized amount in your hands, and massage it onto your scalp for a few minutes. Because it is sticky and thick, it is best to dilute it with another oil and also essential oils. Take a look at my DIY hair growth recipe below!
If you’re looking for something to grow your eyelashes and eyebrows, you need to add, you guessed it, castor oil in your beauty regime. Over the years, castor oil has grown a reputation for the best remedy to grow your lashes and brows. Like with hair, its vitamins, proteins and fatty acids are what’s needed to support healthy lash and brow growth.
Dip a cotton swab into castor oil, and gently rub it over your eyebrows and eyelashes, being a little more careful near the eye area. Apply it overnight, and wash it off in the morning using a clean, damp towel. For best results, apply it daily over the course of a couple of months.
For best results, apply castor oil on your hair at least twice a week.
These are the ingredients needed for this recipe:
The star of the show, castor oil’s nutrient-rich content allows it to treat dry scalp, strengthen hair follicles, and promote hair growth.
Rich in Vitamins C, B and E, jojoba oil is known to moisturize the scalp, strengthen the hair, and give it a healthy shine.
According to a study, rosemary oil is known to perform as minoxidil, a common hair growth treatment. In fact, it also promises less scalp itching as a side effect. It targets cell regeneration and improves hair thickness.
It deep conditions the hair, and helps control dandruff. It also offers a calming, refreshing aroma to this recipe, making it a great way to de-stress.
Cedarwood oil is known to stimulate the scalp and encourage hair growth.
A study deduced that a concoction of rosemary, lavender and cedarwood essential oils used as aromatherapy proved to be a successful treatment of hair loss.
Apart from feeling heavenly relaxing after a long, tiring day, scalp massages are great for hair growth. They are known to stimulate follicles to produce thicker hair and increase blood circulation which encourages hair growth and cell rejuvenation.
The reason for hair loss postpartum is the drastic changes in hormones during the pregnancy period. During pregnancy, estrogen levels tend to be higher, which reduces hair loss. As your hormone levels drop after the arrival of your baby, your hair tends to fall out more.
While this is common and most pregnant women suffer from this, it still tends to be quite worrisome. You can treat it by avoiding heat styling, eating nutrient-rich food, and of course, applying this castor oil treatment regularly.

Great tip! Mixing castor oil with a lighter oil like coconut or almond oil can definitely help to make it easier to apply. Adding a few drops of essential oils not only helps to mask the strong smell of castor oil but also provides additional benefits for your hair or skin. It's always important to dilute potent oils like castor oil to make them more user-friendly and enjoyable to use. Thanks for sharing this helpful advice!
Can almond oil be substituted for jojoba oil?
Do I only put it on my scalp? Can add it to the rest of my hair?
Thank you Eve!! This recipe can be used during the breastfeeding period, or should I exclude the cerdarwood essential oil?
Namaste
Hi ana, its best to avoid essential oils when breastfeeding. Castor oil works on its own for hair growth so you could just use that with jojoba oil!
Thanks Eve!
I love everything you do.
Blessings
Terry
thanks Terry for the kind words, hope it inspires you to make your own :-)
