How to avoid chapped lips

Chapped lips can be a major issue in the winter time, and can strike at any time of year. This organic lip balm recipe will take care of chapped lips for good!

If you have dry lips and dead skin, you may want to use a scrub first. It’s simple: just use some brown sugar, honey and olive oil (1 teaspoon each) and gently massage your lips for a few minutes. Rinse well. Then apply your lip balm – it will be much more effective.

Why make organic lip balm at home?

Your lips are a sensitive part of your body – and they absorb a large amount of what you apply to it. What isn’t absorbed through the skin itself is often ingested.

This makes it especially important to use organic lip balm made with nontoxic ingredients. Most conventional lip balms contain at least some of the following harmful ingredients.

Toxic ingredients to avoid in lip balms

Parabens are a known endocrine disruptor. They are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer and can cause a variety of hormonal issues ranging from PMS to infertility.

Butylated compounds include BHT and BHA, which are also endocrine disruptors that may cause reproductive issues and fertility. They also bio-accumulate in the body and consistent exposure can result in organ toxicity.

Petrolatum is a chemical byproduct derived from the oil-petroleum industry. Its often used in lip products to produce shine like vaseline, its linked with organ toxicity.

Fragrance is a code word that covers phthalates and other synthetic chemicals. The scariest part about this ingredient term is that it is completely unregulated, so it is hard to know exactly what it is standing in for. Make your own lip balm instead to know exactly what you are putting on!

Natural Lip Balm Recipe Ingredients

Emulsifier

Beeswax is made from bee honeycomb. It is firm at room temperature and acts as a natural emulsifier to combine the other oils in this balm into one smooth mixture. It is also naturally anti-inflammatory and helps to form a protective layer over the skin, perfect for soothing chapped lips!

Carrier Oils

Organic castor oil is a vegetable seed oil made from the castor plant. It has a smooth, slippery texture and is naturally shiny, making this lip balm both beautiful and effective! Castor oil may also have a natural plumping effect by drawing more blood flow to the lips.

Organic refined coconut oil is made from the dried coconut kernels. It’s naturally soothing to chapped lips due to its fatty acid content and has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Refined coconut oil will maintain most of the healthy skin benefits without adding a coconut scent. If you prefer to have the scent of coconuts, purchase unrefined, raw coconut oil which will also have more of its fatty acid and natural compounds intact.

Organic hemp oil is extracted from either the stalk or the seeds of the hemp plant. It does not contain the levels of THC in other cannabis products but may contain CBD, which is anti-inflammatory and soothing to the skin. Hemp oil has a high fatty acid profile and forms a natural protective layer over skin. This is typically a thick, liquid oil.

Organic Butters

Organic tucuma (or kokrum) butter (or replace by shea butter) is from Brazil. It is high in vitamin A and rich in lauric, myristic and oleic acids. It is a light, protective butter that both moisturizes and protects the lips without too thick of a feeling on the skin.

Organic Shea butter is another nut butter and is made from the African shea tree. It is rich in vitamins A and E, which smooth and nourishes the skin. When purchasing Shea butter make sure to look for unrefined (has a nutty smell), or refined Shea butter that is no less than grade B.

Organic mango butter is made from the seeds of the mango fruit tree. It is also high in Vitamin A, giving in skin health-boosting properties for your lips. It is also soothing and helps to repair damaged skin cells.

Sweetener and healing agent

Organic liquid honey it is high in antioxidant and which provides a restorative and anti-aging effect for the lips.  Also, it is a natural humectant, which means that it draws more moisture towards it. Look for unrefined or raw organic honey for the best effect and healing properties.

Substitution in organic homemade lip balm

Always keep the same ratio % of beeswax, butter, and oil, but you can customize your organic lip balm recipe to your liking based on what you have on hand. This gives you the opportunity to customize your homemade lip balm exactly how you like!

How to avoid chapped lips?

This recipe will go a long way to eliminate chapped lips – but taking care of your skin is also an inside job! Make sure to eat nutrient-rich whole foods that nourish your system, and focus on healthy fats that help to keep your skin’s lipid barrier nice and healthy. Staying hydrated is also important for hydrated skin, so drink that water and avoid dehydrating beverages that contain alcohol or caffeine whenever possible.

The shelf life depends on the oil and butter you have used and their expiry date. Take the ingredients that expire first and you have your shelf life!
