Making your own organic and natural red lipstick is easier than ever – 10 minutes max, that’s all you really need …A natural red lipstick recipe for all those days where you want to feel more sexy and bold! In this recipe, I’ve used beeswax, shea butter and iron oxides for the color.

A red lip is a signature staple for every beauty repertoire, and with this DIY recipe you can make one without any of the harmful chemicals in conventional lipsticks.

Your average drugstore lipstick, or even high-end lipstick contains chemicals that you end up ingesting like:

Phthalates:  These are endocrine-disrupting compounds that mimic human hormones. Some phthalates have also been associated with liver cancer.

Lead: This is a proven neurotoxin, and has also been linked to miscarriages and infertility.

Quaternium-15: This compound releases formaldehyde gas, which is a known carcinogen.

Butylated Compounds: Butylated Compounds include BHT and BHA, which are also endocrine disruptors linked to reproductive issues and infertility. They may also cause skin irritation and organ toxicity.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, but it should be clear that you do not want these chemicals anywhere near your lips!

Natural Red Lipstick Recipe Ingredients

Beeswax is made from bees’ honeycomb. It is naturally emollient and humectant, which makes it ideal for keeping lips hydrated. It’s also a natural emulsifier, that enables you to create a lipstick that goes on smooth and has some staying power! To buy the best product, be sure to select one that is 100% beeswax with no additives, and one that is certified organic by a trusted third party.

Shea butter is made from the nut of the African shea tree. It is a rich nut butter and is naturally smoothing to the skin, and is high in healing vitamin E. It has a solid texture, which along with beeswax, can help you to make a lipstick that is solid at room temperature and fits in a tube.

Grapeseed oil is made from the seeds of the same plant that produces grapes for wine. It is naturally high in antioxidants and has a smooth, silky texture. It absorbs quickly, but imparts a higher moisture content to this lipstick with its high Omega-6 content.

Iron oxide is a naturally occurring mineral used to deposit color in this natural red lipstick recipe. Rust is actually a form of iron oxide, but don’t worry, you aren’t putting rust into this recipe! Isolated iron oxide does have the same deep red color though. Buy a 100% iron oxide powder to avoid any unwanted additives.

Honey beige mica is a color-form of the naturally occurring mineral mica. In powder form, mica helps to thicken cosmetics and lends color and a subtle shimmer to this lipstick. Honey beige mica gets its color from a blend of minerals like iron oxide.

Antique rose mica, like honey beige mica, is a colored mica created with other minerals for color. When purchasing colored micas, make sure that they get their color from natural mineral compounds and have been approved for cosmetic use.

Peppermint essential oil is an essential oil distilled from mint leaves. Peppermint has natural anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties that are nice in a lip product – not to mention its pleasant and refreshing scent!

Russet iron oxyde is what will your lipstick the red color, it is composed of iron and oxygen as the name suggests. Make sure you buy iron oxydes that are safe for cosmetic use. Another natural alternative is beetroot powder but it will not give you the exact same russian red color.

Instead of beeswax which wax do you recommend, also I’m trying to create a recipe to make matte liquid lipstick base using isododecane and flake resin. Is there anyway you can help because nothing I’ve done has worked.

I think your site is just wonderful, and so rich in information. I thank you for sharing all your knowledge! I so want to make lipstick! It is my main form of makeup, and I buy 2 colors: a bright red, and a purple/pink and I switch between the two. I’m going to try your red recipe, but how would I get the bright pink that I yearn for?

You are wonderful, please keep up the work!
