Here are the top 10 DIY all natural homemade sugar scrub recipes. These recipes are fun, easy, and creative you can make with simple ingredients. Sugar scrubs are a great way to exfoliate, get rid of dead cells as well as rejuvenate your skin.
I was inspired by fellow bloggers on Pinterest. They got my creative juices flowing and inspired me to create my own version of each of the top 10 homemade sugar scrubs. Big thumbs up to all the very talented and creative bloggers mentioned below!
Why scrub with sugar?
Sugar is a natural source of glycolic acid which increases new skin cell production and breaks down the protein that keeps the dead cells hanging onto your skin. The result is glowing, polished, baby smooth skin! You can use most of the sugar scrub recipes on your face or body. It’s always a good idea to do a test on your skin in a small area before applying to your whole face or body. Wait for 24h for any reaction before applying to a larger area on your body or face.
If you have very sensitive skin, I’d suggest switching to oatmeal for gently exfoliating instead of sugar. Salt scrub is great but can be too rough on sensitive skin. I prefer to use salt only in feet scrubs! take care of never scrub irritated skins or wounds.
Homemade sugar scrubs are also very cost effective, easy to make and great to be given as gifts!
How to make homemade sugar scrubs?
The basic ingredients you will need are organic unrefined coconut oil, grapeseed or safflower oil and of course sugar! You can substitute grapeseed oil or safflower oil with a carrier oil like almond oil or sunflower oil. Just keep in mind that oils have different scent and texture.
For example, if you use olive oil in your homemade sugar scrub, you will end up with a greasy scrub. It’s best to use lightweight texture oil like safflower or grapeseed oil. Those oils will absorb to your skin easily, making your skin well hydrated but not greasy.
Also, choose a certified organic carrier oil so you don’t end up with pesticides on your skin….
Top DIY sugar scrub recipes
- To achieve a sandy texture for your sugar scrubs, use a ¾ cup of oil and 1 cup + ½ cup of sugar.
- Adding dried herbs, flowers, clays, seeds and fruits in a scrub takes it to the next level!
- Using fruits in sugar scrubs help getting rid of dead skin, exfoliate and contains natural vitamins.
- Replacing fresh fruits with essential oils makes the scrub last longer.
- Use brown sugar from dark-colored scrubs but lighter sugar for scrubs with pink or yellow shades (like the rose or grapefruit scrubs).
- Depending on the carrier oil you use, you may have to slightly adjust the ratio sugar vs oil.
- The texture of wet sand is nice for a body scrub but sometimes it makes it hard to apply, consider making sugar scrub cubes, see recipe below.
- Keep the sugar scrub airtight and free of water or humidity so it last longer.
- If you use fresh fruit juices, fresh herbs, water or aloe vera (any kind of liquids) the scrub will not last long – probably a few days or a week the most. You also may end up with mold or bacteria so it’s best to use within a few days and keep in the fridge.
- Using fruit powdered extracts or dry herbs will allow your scrub to last longer without the use of preservatives.
Without further ado, here are the top 10 DIY sugar scrub recipes!
1. Matcha Sugar Body Scrub
Inspired from Inspire Beauty Tips
I’m a tea addict and when I saw this green tea sugar scrub recipe, my eyes grew big! I’ve been meaning to incorporate matcha in one of my recipe for a while.
The original recipe includes a strong brewed tea but I’d rather not include any water in this scrub as it would make it go bad more quickly. I’ve used matcha tea in this sugar scrub recipe for its vibrant color but because it is expensive I’ve only used a teaspoon. It can also be irritant to the skin so it’s best not to use too much.
I also had some green tea extract on hand which adds some potent antioxidants to this body scrub. This makes this sugar scrub recipe more potent.
Green tea is rich in antioxidants, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. It helps to repair the effect of aging.
When using extract, take care of following the instruction of the manufacturer and to never increase the recommended amount.
Since I’m in love with earl grey, I’ve added a little bit of bergamot essential oil. Bergamot essential oil is phototoxic so (unless you get the kind that is bergapene free) make sure you wash your skin well and avoid sun exposure right after exfoliating just to be on the safe side. Essential oils are always optional but they take your scrub to the next level!
Now let’s make this homemade Matcha Sugar Body Scrub Recipe!
Ingredients
- 1 tsp of matcha green tea
- ½ cup of organic non refined coconut oil
- ¼ cup of organic safflower oil
- 1 cup + ½ cup of organic sugar refined
- 0.25 tsp of green tea extract
- 10 drops of bergamot essential oil
Instructions
- Whip the coconut oil for a minute or two until it is creamy. It needs to be solidifies so you can whip it. If it is melted (usually around 25C), put it in the fridge for 1 hour.
- Add the oil and continue whipping.
- Add the sugar, matcha and mix well.
- Finally add the essential oils.
- Pour in pretty jars.
- This will last a few months since there is no water. It is best to keep it in the fridge so the sugar does not dissolve with the oils.
- Always take care of using a clean spoon to scoop the scrub so you don’t contaminate it.
- Sit in your bathtub and scrub your body once a week while under the shower.
- Rinse well. Take care of not slipping as the oil can make your tub slippery.
- To wash your tub, use hot water and a natural cleaning agent.
2. Grapefruit Sugar Scrub Recipe
Inspired from Kaley @ Kitchen Mc Cabe
If you’ve never visited the kitchen McCabe blog, you’re missing out! Kaley creates wholesome recipes with beautiful photos, always very inspirational!
I totally fell in love with the color of this grapefruit sugar body scrub, it looks so soothing, fresh and summerlike.
The recipes call for fresh grapefruit juice and beet juice because this can spoil the scrub easily, you will need to keep it in the fridge and use it within a few days.
Grapefruit is a great astringent, meaning it will shrink pores. It also has exfoliating properties that are perfect for oily or acne-prone skin.
It is also rich in antioxidants and vitamins! I’ve used 1 whole grapefruit (peeled) and it gives a nice salmon pink color to the scrub.
Also, I changed the proportion of oil vs sugar so it has the right constituency without the use of juice. I’ve also added some dried orange peel to increase the exfoliation.
Ingredients
- ½ cup of organic coconut oil
- ¼ cup of safflower oil
- 1 cup + ½ cup of organic sugar refined
- 1 whole grapefruit peeled and mixed into a fast blender
- 5 drops of grapefruit essential oil this essential oil is phototoxic so do not apply before going to the sun
- 1 tbs of dried orange peels
Instructions
- Whip the coconut oil for a minute or two until it is creamy. It needs to be solidifies so you can whip it. If it is melted (usually around 25C), put it in the fridge for 1 hour.
- Add the oil and continue whipping.
- Add the sugar, grapefruit and dried orange peels and mix well.
- Finally add the essential oils.
- Pour in pretty jars.
- This sugar scrub recipe will last a few days in the fridge.

3. Rose and Hibiscus Sugar Scrub
The color of the sugar scrub recipe is fantastic, especially given that it is rose petals that give this beautiful color! What a great idea to use flower petals in homemade sugar scrubs.
I substituted the baby oil with coconut oil and voila, you have an all-natural beautiful sugar scrub.
Also, I would personally not use fresh rose petals because well, they won’t last long and will turn brown eventually!
I used dried hibiscus flowers and rosehip extract that give this scrub a beautiful rose color. Rosehip extract is full of vitamin C and has potent antioxidant property.
Ingredients
- ½ cup of organic coconut oil
- ¼ cup of safflower oil
- 1 cup + ½ cup of organic sugar refined
- 1 tbs dried hibiscus flower grounded roughly
- 1 tbs of dried rose petals.
- 1 tsp of rosehip powdered extract it will give it a nice pink color.
- 10 drops of rose geranium essential oils.
- 10 drops of palma rossa essential oil.
- 10 drops of frankincense essential oil.
Instructions
- Whip the coconut oil for a minute or two until it is creamy. It needs to be solidifies so you can whip it. If it is melted (usually around 25C), put it in the fridge for 1 hour.
- Add the oil and continue whipping.
- Add the sugar, dried hibiscus and rose petals and mix well.
4. Sage and Blueberries Sugar Scrub Recipe
inspired by Diane @ Suburbia Unwrapped
Combining herbs and fruits, what a great idea! Being in the middle of winter, I did not have any blackberry in my fridge BUT I had fresh blueberries. The dried sage leaves I had in my spice rack were giving me a sad face….I had neglected them for
too long!
This sugar scrub recipe has anti-aging properties because of the sage leaves and the blueberries.
Sage has anti-aging benefits, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. Blueberries contain the salt of salicylic acid. Salicylic acid helps to remove dead skin and is anti-bacterial. It would be great to clear acne!

- 1 tbs of blueberries mashed
- 1 tsp of dried sage leaves crushed into small pieces

- Finally add the essential oils.
- Pour in pretty jars.
- This will last a few days in the fridge.
5. Lavender Sugar Scrub
inspired from Jessica @ Living chic on the cheap
Using tea bags to your tea is a fantastic idea and super crunchy! It’s an easy sugar scrub to make, cheap and with no frills. I like to blend my own teas at home so I had some dried lavender buds on hands.

It is also anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antidepressant, antiseptic, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties. This makes a great gift!
Ingredients
- ½ cup of organic coconut oil

- 1 cup + ½ cup of organic sugar refined
- 1 tbs of lavender buds
- 20 drops of lavender essential oil
- 10 drops of frankinsence essential oil

6. Chai Sugar Scrub Recipe
Inspired from Hayley @ Give me some oven
Chai!! My favorite tea of all time. I don’t know what I would do without the comforting chai tea on a cold and gloomy winter night! I’m not a fan of olive oil in scrubs; I personally find it too greasy so I replaced it with almond oil and coconut oil.
Also, I find vanilla extract irritant for the skin, makes my skin itchy so I did not include it. Instead of tea bags, I had some organic rooibos chai loose tea with lots of full seeds like cardamom, fennel seeds, etc…
The benefits of cardamom are plenty! It helps to detoxify the body, high in anti-oxidant, helps alleviate depression. It’s also a great remedy to prevent flu and cold!
I’ve added a few essential oils to take this chai sugar scrub to the next level. It smells exotic and dreamy!
Ingredients
- ½ cup of organic coconut oil
- ¼ cup of organic almond oil
- 1 cup + ½ cup of organic sugar refined but not white
- 1 tbs chai loose tea
- 10 drops of cardamom essential oil
- 5 drops of clove bud essential oil
- 3 drops of black pepper essential oil
Instructions
- Directions
- Whip the coconut oil for a minute or two until it is creamy. It needs to be solidifies so you can whip it. If it is melted (usually around 25C), put it in the fridge for 1 hour.
- Add the oil and continue whipping.
- Add the sugar, chai tea and mix well.
- This will make 4 little jars and 4 applications if you are using it on your whole body.
7. Calendula Sugar Scrub Cube recipe
Inspired from Stephanie @ hello glow
Love, love the idea of packaging the sugar scrub in cubes. It’s so much easier to handle in the shower! You will need a melt and pour soap base for this recipe.
If you use shredded solid soap, It may not melt and combine with the oil as it should.
Calendula will give a light orange tint to your sugar scrub. It’s also so pretty to add the whole flower petals!
Calendula is known as marigold, it has great healing properties and treats wounds and skin irritations. It has been known for centuries to have inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
The ground natural loofa is an amazing exfoliator and a great addition to a sugar scrub. It is optional here so do not worry if you do not have it on hand.
Ingredients
- 4 tbs of organic sugar refined but not white
- 1 cup of organic melt and pour soap base
- 1 tbs of grapeseed oil
- 1 tbs of ground loofa optional
- 2 tbs of calendula flowers
- 10 drops of sweet orange essential oil

- Once melted, add the sugar and grapeseed oil, mix well.
- Add loofa and calendula flowers
- Add 10 drops of sweet organic essential oil

- Freeze for an hour or until the soap has solidified.
- Unmold and scrub away! It can be used for the whole body but is also great for a hand sugar scrub.
8. Coconut and Calendula Sugar Scrub
Inspired from Kate @ Our best bites
This one is very simple but it’s also super convenient and easy to make! I’ve added some sweet orange and frankincense essential oils to add a beautiful citrus scent. Instead of fresh orange zest, I’ve used dried orange peel and also added some safflower oil so it’s not too greasy.
I’ve added some calendula flowers because they give a wonderful orange color and have healing properties for your skin.
Coconut oil is a miracle oil. It can be used as massage oil, deodorant, insect repellent, cold sore treatment, body oil, sunburn relief and natural SFP4… Be sure to use unrefined organic coconut oil as this will have the most fragrant coconut scent.

- This will make 4 little jars and 4 applications if you are using it on your whole body.
9. Strawberry Chia Sugar Scrub Recipe
Inspired From Tonia @ The gunny sack
Strawberries are full of vitamin C but also improve the skin complexion. This sugar scrub recipe has a light whitening effect. Strawberries also contains salicylic acid and ellagic acid, which are known for reducing hyperpigmentation and dark spots. It’s also great to heal acne.
This recipe is using freeze-dried strawberry and that’s simply genius! Because there is no water in the strawberry it will last for a while.
I did not have frozen dried strawberries on hand so I used fresh strawberries. In my own version of this strawberry sugar scrub, I’ve added some chia seeds because strawberries, chia seeds, and honey make the most fantastic strawberry jam EVER! Check out my vegan strawberry chia seed muffin recipe if you are a baker.

10. Chocolate sugar scrub recipe
Inspired From Crystal @ a pumpkin and a princess
I could not resist including a chocolate sugar scrub in this top 10 DIY sugar scrub recipes! Chocolate a.k.a raw cocoa is not bad for you. What’s bad for you is the milk, sugar, butter, lecithin and other artificial ingredients added to the commercial chocolate bars!
Did you know that cocoa powder is full of antioxidants and is also a good way to lighten your skin naturally? The cocoa flavanols are also great for improving skin texture, repairing damaged skin and maintaining a glowing complexion.
Here is my version of the chocolate sugar body scrub:
Ingredients
- ½ cup of organic coconut oil
- ¼ cup of safflower oil
- 1 cup + ½ cup of organic brown sugar
- 1 tbs organic raw cocoa powder
- 1 tbs of maple syrup or honey
Instructions
- Whip the coconut oil for a minute or two until it is creamy. It needs to be solidified so you can whip it. If it is melted (usually around 25C), put it in the fridge for 1 hour.
- Add the oil and continue whipping.
- Add the sugar, cocoa powder and mix well.
- Finally, add the essential oils.
- This will make 4 little jars and 4 applications if you are using it on your whole body.
- Now, I’d love to hear from you, what is your favorite sugar scrub? Let me know in the comments below!
I hope you have enjoyed my recipe, please share the love and rate ***** in the comments below!
Loved it
Am thinking of starting a organic skin care line. I would like to start with the scrubs (COZ, THEY ARE EASY). What is best preservative that i can use when it comes to Banana and Pineapple
Hi Eve!
I love your recipes and have been creating wonderful product with them. Do you have recipes for facial cleansers that have anti aging properties? In the past I have used a natural Tumeric cleanser but I do not like the smell, and it does have some ingredients that are not as natural as I thought once I researched. I will use the sugar scrubs but really would love to see cleansing options.
Author
Hi Maria, thank you for your kind words!
I suggest using my apricot kernel powder face scrub that helps removing fine lines https://www.organic-beauty-recipes.com/how-to-make-a-face-scrub-with-apricot-kernel-powder/
If you are talking about a daily cleanser, I would recommend using rose hydrosol that is great for mature skin!
It is a wonderful site, thank you, do you have any recipe for scrubs with crushed grape seeds, and grape extract.
Author
thank you Christa! not yet but I’ll put this on my list 🙂
Dear Eve, your recipes are so wonderful. I love them!
I just wanted to know what other base I can use instead of coconut oil or any oil in which the sugar doesn’t dissolve? I mean can I use, say, organic honey instead of coconut oil? Do sugar crystals dissolve in honey?
Author
Thanks Deepa <3 - Instead of coconut oil, you could use another carrier oil like grapeseed oil or almond oil. Sugar will eventually dissolve in honey and the scrub will be sticky, not ideal until you use it on your face as an immediate application. Hope this helps!
Hello, how do you know what are the right amounts of oils for each scrub and what to use for each scrub? And what can happen if you do not have the right measures? Also how do you determine the duration of the scrub?
Author
Hi, there are the recipes in for each of the scrub in this post so you need to follow the directions.
As for the shelve life, if there is water or fruits, it lasts only a few days. If there is no water content or fresh fruits then it can last a few months.
Wow! I’m so delighted and thankful for your posts, they are so awesome! I’m preparing to try them already. Cheers!
Love these recipes and can’t wait to try them.
I’m trying to make a lilac and lime zest scrub for my book club members.
We’ve just finished “Lilac Girls”.
Should I use the lavender recipe?
Thank you for sharing your beautiful recipes,..
Just a thought. Can i use organic strawberry jam instead of freeze dried strawberries? coz i heard jams has longer shelf life.
Author
Hi Cy, strawberry jam has a lot of sugar and you would need to keep the scrub in the fridge.
This is a nice blog. wanted to know the scrub I could use for my sensitive face and have got some acne. thank you very much
Author
I would not use scrub on a sensitive skin. You could use clay instead (ghassoul clay or green french clay), its much finer and help with balancing the skin.
Hi there!
In relation to the recipe for Coconut And Calendula Sugar Scrub – is it the wrong recipe underneath this? As the instructions include different ingredients. Love your site! Thanks!
Author
Hi danielle, not sure what you mean, the coconut and calendula sugar scrub recipe is on the blog post and the ingredients are there.
Reposting here:
½ cup of organic coconut oil
¼ cup of safflower oil
1 cup + ½ cup of organic sugar refined but not white
1 tbs grounded calendula flowers
10 drops of sweet orange essential oil
5 drops of frankincense essential oil
10 drops of grapefruit essential oil
Have fun! 🙂
Hi Eve. What Danielle is trying to say is that the ingredients for the chocolate sugar scrub doesn’t fit the instructions underneath. You mentioned chai in the instructions but none in the ingredients list. Also the cocoa powder you mentioned in the ingredients list does not appear in the instructions. Seems like you mixed one recipe with instructions for another. Love you!
Author
OH right! thanks Ify, did not notice, its updated now 🙂
So is long as there isn’t any water in them they will last for months, right? Or did I read that differently. I’ve never used sugar scrubs before and I love making things. I haven’t yet but plan on making soap and other things like that because I love all natural products. How do I apply the scrub, with my hand or do I need to use a rag or something like that? I love your blog and I plan on making all of them eventually.
Author
Hi alison, correct, as long as there is no water contamination and no fresh ingredients (like fresh fruits for example) and take care of using a spoon to take it out of the recipient (to avoid possible contamination with your hands if they are dirty) you can keep it 6months to a year.
That all depends on the self life of the oil you are using too, so look at the expiry date.
To apply, you can gently rub your body with your hands.
Have fun!!
the coconut & calendula sugar scrub still calls for chai tea in the instructions but no in ingredients list. does it have this? How much?
Author
I updated the recipe, take a look and let me know if you have other question.
My skin is very very sensitive, what scrub do you recommend or do you recommend a scrub for my type of akin. Thanking you in advance for any information.
Author
Hi Dorothy,
You could do a patch test on a small area of your skin with the lavender body scrub and wait 24h to see if there are any reaction. Just be gentle and avoid the use of essential oils unless its lavender.
Hi, for the bottom recipe (the chocolate one), in the ingredients, it doesn’t mention chai tea or essential oils but it does in the method. Which is right? Thanks for the recipes, though, they look amazing and I can’t wait to try to make one!
Author
Hi esme, raw cocoa powder = chocolate, it comes from the cocoa bean which makes chocolate when you add sugar.
this is a really helpfull website and i want more but does all of the ingredience have to have safflower oil? cause i dont have that and i cant get that. and i would be great if you would make a different recipie without safflower. thank you very much and send me an email if you make anymore.
Author
HI ariana, you can use almond oil instead of saflower oil if its easier to find for you!
how long does this sugar scrub lasts??
Author
Hi Karen, which sugar scrub? there are 10 on the page.
There are some lovely sounding recipes here! Why do you use solid coconut oil rather than fractionated coconut oil? That’s how I usually make mine and the sugar never dissolves and I don’t have to keep it refrigerated.
Author
Hi Patti, I prefer using raw organic coconut oil as it has not been processed and still has the lovely natural coconut scent!
You mentioned that the lavender scrub would last only a few days in the fridge however I noticed there is no water in any of the items. What would be the reason for it not lasting for several months?
Author
Hi Carol, you are right, this was a typo, the recipe is updated!
I love theses scrubs! They are amazing and help with stress and pain. You are AWESOME!!!
Author
Thank you sincy!!
Hello Eva,
This blog is wonderful. I would like to know where can we find dried orange peels and calendula flowers?
Author
Hi Krishna, thanks for your kind words! you can find dried orange peels here and calendula flower here!
OMG, I just discovered your blog and it’s honestly amazing! I love love love your posts! I’m definitely going to try some of these scrubs out! They all look so good!
Author
Hi Melanie, thank you so much for the love! Let me know if you have questions on the scrubs 🙂
Hi, would love to try the lavender sugar scrub recipe, but I would add strawberry to it cos I can’t resist that smell
Hi, Eve,
What pretty things you’ve created! I wonder if you would be willing to list your amounts of ingredients by weight, rather than by volume? Thanks for that.
And you probably already know that you’ve listed your instructions for the “blubbery” scrub underneath the Lavender Sugar Scrub. Stuff happens, I know!
Thanks for all your pretty creations!
Jay

Thanks Jay! I’ll correct the mistake, thanks for pointing it out!
