If you are looking for an easy coconut oil body butter recipe like body shop but without the chemicals, you have come to the right place! You can whip this homemade coconut oil body butter recipe in max 20 minutes in your kitchen. It’s a great body butter to fight against dry and flaky skin.
I’ve used shea butter, cooa butter, sunflower oil and of course organic coconut oil.
Instead of crappy chemical fragrances used by Body shop, I’ve used organic essential oils. You can always skip the essential oils if you prefer to make an unscented homemade coconut body butter, that’s totally up to you!
Last but not least, this is a vegan coconut oil body butter recipes as it contains no beeswax. I have used carnauba wax instead.
Acting as a carrier oil or vehicle for the body butter, coconut oil is in a solid state at 76 degrees and melts when applied to the skin. It makes a perfect ingredient for any body butter recipe. It is also known for its antimicrobial and moisturizing properties which keep the skin nourished.
Shea Butter is a fat that is derived from the nut of the African shea tree and has a faint yellow color and nutty smell when it is unrefined. It contains vitamins F, A and E along with essential fatty acids that provide intense moisture and hydration to the skin. It also has a natural SPF factor which protects skin from harmful effects of the sun.
Cocoa butter is a fat acquired from the cacao bean pod and has a creamy texture and yellow color. Since it is an amazing thickening agent, it is useful in maintaining the texture of your body butter recipe. It contains high amounts of vitamin E and antioxidants which nourish and hydrate the skin while protecting it from signs of aging.
Since coconut oil tends to solidify at colder temperatures, we need to add another carrier oil to have a silky texture to your body butter. I have chosen sunflower oil because it is cost efficient, practically unscented and has moisturizing and skin conditioning properties. It is also high in vitamin E which helps prevent sun damage and skin irritation.
You are assured that all the ingredients of your body butter are organic, all-natural and safe for your skin.
When you make your own body butter, you can find a way on how to make body butter less greasy and can customize it to your own liking.
It will save you money! That’s most especially true if you plan on giving the body butter as gifts to your friends and family.
It saddens me that body shop claim to offer natural body beauty products where they are indeed full of chemical ingredients. Make your own body butter recipe and stop giving money to multinational that do not care about your health and are only there for the money. Plus body shop is now owned by L’oreal and they do animal testing.
Also, I noticed something a bit amusing is that the coconut oil body butter, the cocoa body butter while they have different names and different packaging, they have pretty much the same ingredient list. The only difference is the fragrance… the coconut oil body butter contains the following chemicals:
The coconut oil body butter contains the following chemicals:
Aqua/Water (Solvent), Glycerin (Humectant), Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter/Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter (Emollient), Butyrospermum Parkii Butter/Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter (Skin Conditioning Agent – Emollient), Helianthus Annuus Hybrid Oil (Emollient), Cetearyl Alcohol (Emulsifying Agent), Glyceryl Stearate (Emulsifying Agent), C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate (Emollient), PEG-100 Stearate (Surfactant), Ethylhexyl Palmitate (Skin Conditioning Agent), Cocos Nucifera Oil/Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil (Emollient/Hair Conditioner), Bertholletia Excelsa Seed Oil (Emollient), Caprylyl Glycol (Skin Conditioning Agent), Dimethicone (Skin Conditioning Agent), Cera Alba/Beeswax (Viscosity Controlling Agent), Parfum/Fragrance (Fragrance Ingredient), Xanthan Gum (Viscosity Controlling Agent), Sodium Hydroxide (pH Adjuster), Disodium EDTA (Chelating Agent), Benzyl Benzoate (Fragrance Ingredient), Coumarin (Fragrance Ingredient), Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Fragrance Ingredient), Citric Acid (pH Adjuster), Caramel (Colorant).

Such a great easy recipe I can’t wait to make it. From my experience with other recipes using the same ingredients I tend to notice that the cream hardens when it sets even if I whip it. What can I add to make it soft ?
Thank you.

Hi I was just wondering how if it is oily or if it is light and fluffy without the oily feel?
Hi Eve!! Thank You for posting this Beautiful recipe!! I bought all the ingredients & everything is printed out. I have one question. I have done a LOT of homework my self & want to give it a sea/ beachy scent. I've purchased all of the oils that can do that giving it a " marine", "Burnt sand", " aqua water", Bernoulli ", & "cedar wood" scent as most of my products including candles revolves around The Beachy Theme that I love so much & am inspired by My BESTFRIEND, MY BEAUTIFUL MOTHER CYNDI who passed away too soon & could & can't cope w/ her recent passing. I believe she put all of this in my lap from Heaven above watching me Literally die of a broken heart. All my pain, sadness and energy goes into what I do as I am a very creative person. In your opinion, what is the best EO'S to create that smell that I'm TRYING to create. Much Love! Deborah
Can you substitute Carnahan wax to beeswax?
I really need help trying to achieve the " marine", "sea" , Beach scent as there are several notes that go into that. I bought what I could find after doing some research as Eternal essence Essential oils & others DO NOT carry those "real sea notes" & can I also as Argon oil to the recipe as it absorbs quickly not leaving that greasiness to the whipped mango body butter? I know arrowroot does that as well, but argon oil is wonderful for the skin. Please help!?
It's a Beautiful recipe. Easy to make. But I don't just want coconut/vanilla scented butters as Am all about that beach smell you would get from IKG BEACH Hair volumizer or Very Sexy Sea perfume OR Victoria Secret Pink coco coco body spray. What essential oil notes would you recommend to get something close to a beach scent???? ThankYou,
Is it ok to use plastic jars instead of glass. How can I get rid of the gritty feel - do I need to whisk it for longer?
I would not use plastic jars as they have chemicals in them that over time could damage your product
Glass is the way to go.
For plastic jar, sure you can use them but glass is best!
I love the body butter but it feels a bit gritty - do you think I should have whisked it for longer? Or maybe I whisked it for too long...
its probably your shea butter that is grainy, please read this post that explain it: https://www.organic-beauty-recipes.com/grainy-shea-butter-lets-fix-it/
Some natural skin and lip care products I've purchased end up with a rancid oil smell. I was reluctant to try making my own because I really dislike that smell. Some people don't notice it but I have a very sensitive sence of smell and that ruins it for me. What would a natural preservative be, or is something in this recipe already a natural preservative? Also, can I add monoi oil somewhere in this as just an addition or a substitute? I really like the smell.
you could replace coconut oil by monoi.
natural product should not smell rancid, if they do its because they are expired.
There is no need for preservatives here since there is no water content.
This recipe has a perfect texture for me to put in an airless push container. These containers are perfect for keeping the body butter uncontaminated and easily dispensed. There was a very good choice of containers on the site you recommended, as well.
Back to the texture-again, perfect. I sifted the arrowroot in for oily texture control. It was effective. I plan on adding a hint of color once I hone in on the way it smells. I pinned the recipe to my body butters. Thank you.
awesome! thanks for sharing your feedback Pamela :-)
Eve, thank you for your very generous sharing. You seem to be a very caring person. Please don't change ;)
Do you have or will you be developing spot treatment recipes? I need something for my forehead wrinkles and my very aging saggy eyelids!! I seem to have triple eyelids ;O !! Thank you Eve.
Thanks Yvonne! have you tried rosehip oil? it works miracles for wrinkles, here is the recipe: https://www.organic-beauty-recipes.com/diy-face-serum-recipe-anti-wrinkles-with-essential-oils/
Totally agree about the body shop. I make my own products and use them in my treatments. When i first started looking into cleansing balms i could not belive their ingredients. And how people believe they are so natural. Its great for people to have informative blogs on the benefits of DIY prodcuts x
