For all the coco nuts out there, I’ve created this easy coconut oil lip balm recipe DIY, Step By Step recipe you can create right in your kitchen!
Coconut oil is excellent as a skin moisturiser and softener.
I am also using castor oil in this coconut oil lip balm recipe to add extra shine but you could use another liquid carrier oil like safflower oil or olive oil if you wanted something less shiny.
Beeswax is what will make your lip balm harden so don’t skip this ingredient… Add some peppermint essential oil for a “fresh like” sensation which is to say the least… ideal in the summer!
If you choose refined coconut oil, it will not have the lovely coconut scent, opt in for the virgin non refined coconut oil; always organic please!
You can buy plastic lip balm containers on amazon.com. If you live in canada, go to amazon.ca; you will avoid hefty customs fees that way!
Step 1 Gather all the ingredients and add the beeswax, castor oil and coconut oil in a double boiler or a pan filled with water. You will need 6 to 8 lip balm containers for this recipe.
Step 2 Once melted, add the essential oil if desired and mix well.
Step 3 Pour the liquid wax in the lip balm containers and fill them to the top. If it has already starting to harden, don’t panic! Put it back into the double boiler for a few seconds until it melts again and pour the rest in the lip balm containers.
Step 4 Wait one hour or two until the wax starts to harden then you can use the lip balm right away! If it is a hot day, you can pop the lip balm containers in the fridge so the lip balm harden more quickly.
Voilà, you have made your own coconut oil lip balm recipe right in your kitchen, how fun and easy was that?!
Yield: 6 to 8 lips balm containers.
PS: if you wonder how to clean the mess in the double boiler, the easiest way is to wipe the reminding oil inside the pan with a paper towel, then it will be much easier to wash as most of the grease is gone. (you’re welcome!)

Hello Eve, I just got all the ingredients for this recipe delivered at home, but unfortunately, the beeswax is unrefined. Will it affect the shelflife and quality of lip balm or should I buy a new batch of refined beeswax?
Hello
Thank you for such an accurate DIY recipe, I just made a batch of 12 lip balms following this recipe. I substituted lip balm tubes with small lip balm tin containers and mixed in a little bit of beetroot powder to add tint to the lip balms. It was a great hit among my friends, thank you for sharing this, looking forward to trying more of your amazing DIY's. Have a good day.
Hi Eve,
I love your website! Thanks so much for the wonderful recipes.
I have a question, is there another essential oil I can use in this lip balm? I'm not a fan of peppermint or any other minty oil.
Thanks,
Hi Devi, thanks for the encouragement :-)
yes, you could use rosemary or lavender essential oil.
Hi Eve, I have so enjoyed all your recipes. Question: I have tried to make your Whipped Cocoa butter lotion. It keeps getting hard. I have added more coconut oil several times. Any tips would be great.
Thanks so much
Shirley Kennedy
Or use Shea Butter for part of the cocoa butter?
yes you could!
Shirley, which lotion you are trying to make? pls post the link. If you want a softer consistency, then use more oil like safflower (not coconut).
Hi Eve, I just tried the recipe and I am amazed how easy it is. The balm came out pretty awesome :))) Do you think I can melt the balm after it already hardened and fill it in other containers (bought the wrong containers but was in the process already) or will it loose its quality?
Hi Dinah, so glad it worked out for you!!! :-) yes, you can definitely melt the balm after it has hardened and fill it into containers.
Hi there!
Is there a substitute for beeswax you can recommend? I'm allergic. I've been trying to find a recipe without it, but it's proving to be more difficult than I thought. :)
Thanks!
Hi Gia, you can replace beeswax by candellila wax, I have a good recipe here: https://www.organic-beauty-recipes.com/vegan-lip-balm-recipe-with-candelilla-wax/
Hi and thanks :-) Does it soften in hotter weather due to the high quantity of coconut oil and changes in temperature?
Hi Anne,
yes it soften like butter but does not turn liquid unless you leave it under the sun!
Thanks,
hai... what's the self life of lip balm
HI indira, the shelf life is 1 year.
Hi!can i colour lip balm with something
HI Nandini, yes! you can use mica or natural coloring to your lip balm but its going to give you a tinted lip balm and not a lipstick.
Hi Eve..thanks for this recipe. I will definitely try it. Just one quick question...what can I use as a substitute for the coconut oil due to allergies?? Thanks
Hi Cherry, yes! you can use almond oil, jojoba oil. It will make your lip balm less thick so add a bit of wax to compensate! I will try to make a recip without coconut oil in the future, stay tuned :-)
