My DIY face cream has the rich goodness of shea butter, is vegan and you’ll only need 3 ingredients: st john wort oil, jojoba oil and of course shea butter. You don’t even need beeswax for it!
In a time where you can DIY literally everything, why not save some cha-ching and make your own DIY face cream? Your bank account will thank me, I guarantee it! A custom-made face cream will surely suit your skin type, whether you’ve got sensitive, dry or oily skin. I’ve got plenty of options and substitutions of carrier oils below for all type of skins.
The consistency of this DIY face cream will depend on the kind of butter and oil you use. In my face cream recipe below, the cream is like soft butter, fondant, and melting on the contact of your skin. If it warm in your room, it will stay as a cream, too hot and it will be liquid but still usable on your face.
Here’s what you’re going to need for your homemade face cream, and how each will benefit your skin:
Not only does it have a refreshing pink tint to it, but it is also a natural healer that reduces wrinkles, blemishes, and hyperpigmentation. It also relieves and soothes aches. It has a beautiful pink color!
A soothing agent with anti-inflammatory properties as well as rich nutrients and antioxidants.
Provides long-lasting hydration and supple-looking skin.
Along with it’s luscious calming scent, it also offers anti-septic properties and gently soothes and nourishes the skin.
It penetrates deep in your skin and calms down irritated skin and evens out your skin tone.
Many years ago, I got tired of paying outrageous amounts for face creams that are full of chemicals whose names I literally can’t even pronounce. Then I switch to organic face cream but could not stand to spend so much money each month. And don’t get fooled by the model advertising and that’s holding the product – her face is full of makeup on. Trust me, there’s nothing better than making your own face cream with the richness that 100% natural ingredients.
No, because there’s no water content in this face cream. Preservatives are only needed for products containing water, as they kill water-borne bacteria and prevent spoilage.
Just make sure you clean your hands or apply the cream with a clean spoon.
You have to make sure that the oils you’re using in your DIY face cream are fast-absorbing. The faster it will penetrate your skin, the lesser the chance of it leaving your skin greasy. And remember, less is more. You don’t have to slather it on your face to reap the benefits.
If you’re not satisfied with the consistency and would like to thicken it, you can always add more shea butter to your face cream. You can also add beeswax, but it tends to leave a film on your face, which isn’t the most comfortable feeling.
The entire procedure is quite simple! You just need to mix the right oils in the right quantities with a hand mixer and you’re good to go! But remember, you have to be very careful in your selection of oils – as some can clog your pores!
Like I mentioned, you need to make sure that the oil you’re opting for is 1) fast-absorbing 2) does not leave a greasy after-effect on your face, and most importantly 3) suits your skin type.
Here’s a list of oils that are rich in skin-nourishing properties:
Before you go for any oil, just check for its comedogenic rating, which ranks oils and butters based on their likelihood to clog pores. It’s best if the comedogenic rating is between 0-2 maximum. The lower the rating, the lesser the chance it’ll clog your pores.
The best thing about a DIY face cream is that you can choose to put in the oil that is most suited to your skin type. I’ve listed below a few oils based on different skin types.
Avocado oil and Evening primrose oil offer nutrients that nourish, heal and moisturize the skin as well as reduce redness caused by dryness.
Jojoba oil mimics sebum (oil secretion in our skin) and encourages the skin to produce less of it. Grapeseed oil reduces clogged pores, which can help reduce your natural oil content, leaving your skin looking smooth and fresh.
Isn’t jojoba oil the answer to all our skin prayers? It’s gentle and non-allergenic nature makes it suitable for sensitive skin and helps reduce flare-ups.
While almond oil is rich in Vitamin A and sunflower oil in Vitamin E, both are rich in antioxidants and improve complexion and skin tone.
Both oils have anti-inflammatory properties and are great at combating skincare issues like acne. Tamanu oil is especially known to heal the skin.
Argan oil is used for its anti-aging and regenerating effects, and rosehip oil can help fight age spots and wrinkles. Both of these oils help hydrate the skin and boost collagen levels.

Love the Face Cream recipe. Is it possible to add Ascorbic Acid for a little pick me up of Vitamin C? Thank you for your knowledge and willingness to share.
I haven't tried this recipe yet. Does the St John Wort need to be an oil or can you use a power form? The recipe doesn't state form but I see in your messages you used oil. There are tinctures but they seen to be alcohol based or glycerin based. If you answer is yes to St John Wort in powder form do I need to mix it with oil first or just put it in.
Thanks you. I am excited about trying these recipes.
Thank you for sharing Wonderful recipes ,do you have any Face Cream/moisturizer recipe that uses Glycerite?as I have just made my first Rose petals glycerite and would luv to use it in Face Care n Lip Care now as it's a lovely Pink Color
Hi manisha, sorry I have not used glycerite yet but it's on my radar!
My take is that it should be used as a tincture so for the face not more than 0.50% of the total amount of the face cream for example. It's pretty powerful so less is more!
Hi Eva,
I just started following you and I am already in love with your blog. Looking forward i will be trying many recipes from your collection and will let u know the results too
I wanted to try this face cream recipe but I don't have st John wort oil and the chamomile essential oil. Can i skip these 2 oils and still make this recipe? Also i have tried rose hip seed oil and jojoba oil on my skin and they suit me. So can I use them in place of John wort oil?
Please excuse my ignorance as I am very new to this diy world..
Thanks again,stay blessed.
Hi Lizzy, Thanks for your kind words!
its best to keep the same ratio oil/butter as explained on the recipe. So you can use rose hip oil or jojoba oil instead of the st john wort oil. As for essential oils, you can skip them, they are always optional!
Hi Eve,
Where can you find the container that you used in this DIY Face Cream photo? It is so pretty!
very pretty indeed but sorry I bought this ages ago and cannot remember where!
however, there is some other very pretty face cream containers on amazon, take a look: https://amzn.to/3bou9n8
Hi, it's me again, my face tend to get oily as the day progresses, which is the best oil for my skin type. I was thinking Jojoba. Also, any wrinkle reducing recipe.? for the neck/throat area.
Thanks again, Loida
Hi Eve, thank you for all the recipes, I am working on developing my own line of organic cosmetics, but for now just trying face cream and lotion. What can be added to the recipe for sun blocking.? can I add zinc oxide as a sunscreen to the recipe, and if not, what can I add.
thanks, Loida
adios
you can add raspberry seed oil that has a natural SFP!
What are the amounts of oil to be added for mature skin and what oils do you leave out?
So no german chamomile in the actual recipe? The tutorial lists this oil but not the rose oil and helychrisum which is in the actual recipe which I printed out to try...looking forward to using this face cream.
I updated the recipe! Enjoy...
Hi, I love your products. I'm hoping to make this face cream soon but could I use different essential oils? If so, could you recommend any? I am struggling to find a vegan rose absolute at a reasonable price.
essential oil are optional and you could use just lavender essential oil!
