Learn how to make a DIY Vicks vapo rub recipe that can be done at the comfort of your own home with castor oil, coconut oil, beeswax and a blend of powerful essential oils.

  • Put in water, castor oil, coconut oil and the beeswax pellets together in a double boiler. Leave it to boil and give the mixture time to melt.
  • Once soft enough, stir the mixture with a tool of your choice (a chopstick or spatula would work great). Add your preferred essential oils. This makes a 5% dilution with a maximum of 30 drops for 30 ml/ 1oz. Be cautious not to increase the dilution ratio as essential oils are powerful.
  • Take a container with a lid and pour the mixture into it. Your batch can be put in different packs depending on your needs.

  • Leave it to dry until it turns into a paste viscous enough to rub on your skin. Now you have your own homemade vicks vapo rub.
  • Tightly close the lid and keep the container on a cool and dry place. Use as necessary.

A few precautions before you proceed to use the homemade Vicks on children under 10. Always ask your family doctor or naturopath before applying to children. Not recommended to use on baby’s as essential oils are too powerful.

If you’re concocting this for a child, you would want to steer clear of eucalyptus, rosemary and peppermint oils. These are known to have some certain unwanted effects on children, and those below two years old are advised to stay away completely from the ingredients.

Older children are safe so long as the oils are kept to a minimum and are diluted as much as possible.
