I have researched how to make a DIY Homemade Vicks vapo rub recipe that can be done at the comfort of your own home with castor oil, coconut oil, beeswax and a blend of powerful essential oils. A homemade vicks vapo rub that is an all-natural alternative and will provide the same benefits of the branded one without its harmful chemicals.
The familiar, strong menthol smell of Vicks VapoRub is something I used to associate with relief from a clogged nose or breathing easily when I’m sick. But when I learned about its general ineffectiveness and the dangers that come with its ingredients, the Vicks Vaporub isn’t my go-to ailment relief anymore…
If you take the time to look at the ingredients on the label, you would see that Vicks contains both petrolatum and turpentine, which can be toxic in large doses and can cause a variety of side effects. Some of its unpleasant consequences include headache, kidney damage, vomiting, and even death!
Castor oil is extracted from castor beans through the process of cold pressing. It is a powerful oil that serves many uses to people, especially when it comes to health. It can serve as an all-natural cough remedy through topical application on the chest. It penetrates the skin to induce proper circulation and healing which makes it a great ingredient for the homemade vicks vapo rub.
The coconut oil is the product of an extraction process done to the meat of mature coconuts. It is greatly used for health and cosmetics benefits because of its high antioxidant content, plus its antiviral and antibacterial properties. It can shorten the duration of coughs and colds, plus have a soothing effect as well.
The white beeswax pellets come from the naturally made beeswax in the honeycomb. It is often added to skincare products because of its skin-soothing abilities, especially when directly applied. It is anti-allergenic and a great Vitamin A source, too.
You can substitute by yellow beeswax, the end product will be more yellow than white.
From the hybrid between water mint and spearmint, the peppermint essential oil is produced through cold extraction. It has centuries-long of medicinal history, especially with its known benefits of relieving respiratory illness, an agent that unclogs blocked sinuses, and reduce congestion in the airways, especially when a person has terrible coughs and colds.
From the fragrant rosemary herb, rosemary essential oil carries an amazing aroma and whole lot of health benefits that are offered by its source as well. Aside from boosting the overall immune system, rosemary essential oil is a wonderful solution for discomfort when you have colds and flu. It removes congestion, cough, and even clears out the sinuses.
The clove essential oil comes from the flower buds of the clove tree. It has anti-bacterial properties that help with skin conditions and other medical conditions like pneumonia. It is a known booster of the immune system as well.
Made from the leaves of the eucalyptus plant, the eucalyptus essential oil has a great track record when it comes to medicinal uses and properties. It mainly helps in improving respiratory conditions, from simple colds & cough to more complicated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, or bronchitis.
Thyme essential oil comes from thyme, an herb that is also part of the mint family. Aside from cooking and household uses, this oil is also known for its medicinal properties. It is an effective home remedy for colds and other respiratory problems, especially when it can reduce spasms during cough and fight cough-causing bacteria and virus.
A few precautions before you proceed to use the homemade Vicks on children under 10. Always ask your family doctor or naturopath before applying to children. Not recommended to use on baby’s as essential oils are too powerful.
If you’re concocting this for a child, you would want to steer clear of eucalyptus, rosemary and peppermint oils. These are known to have some certain unwanted effects on children, and those below two years old are advised to stay away completely from the ingredients.
Older children are safe so long as the oils are kept to a minimum and are diluted as much as possible.
If you’re creating the homemade vicks vapo rub for you, a combination of the three oil and additionally preferred oils will work wonders for your breathing. In contrast to children, the so-called monoterpenes on the three work on adults to keep a healthy respiratory system. These are even used in the treatment of respiratory disorders such as sinusitis, bronchitis, asthma, and COPD.
Make it a habit to also check that the essential oils you’re using for your homemade vick vapo rub are 100% pure and high grade. When done right, your homemade vicks can be very powerful. Ensuring the quality of your essential oils is high, such as being certified organic by USDA is key to the quality of your final product.
Stay away from all synthetics and not 100% pure essential oils.
