I have another great lip gloss recipe to add to your DIY beauty arsenal. This pink lip gloss recipe with beetroot provides a light, shiny texture and a bright pink pop of color. I’ve used white beeswax, shea butter, coconut oil, sunflower oil and peppermint essential oil in this lip gloss recipe.
In addition to avoiding all of the chemicals in conventional liquid glosses, you’ll also be delighted by the non-sticky feel and hydrating effect of this liquid gloss.
This pink liquid lip gloss recipe with beetroot gets its shine from oils and a small amount of natural wax – this produces a smooth, non-sticky feel that also nourishes and hydrates your lips!
I’ve tried this DIY lip gloss 2 ways:
This simple change gave me different results and shade of red or pink. I will explain in more detail below.
Using beetroot concentrate was my favorite as it gave a deep red color that gave a nice pink tint and beautiful shine to my lips. It blends easily and makes a very smooth finish. See the results below:
If you are using beetroot powder, make sure you blend it very fine in a fast blender. Otherwise, you will end up with a gritty lip gloss. The color is a beautiful pink and less red than my lip gloss recipe with beet juice concentrate. You can see the tiny grain of the beetroot powder below. The finish is shiny and gives a more natural look on the lips.
Coconut oil is made from the dried kernel of coconuts. Well-known for its nourishing healthy fats, including amino acids and caprylic acid, that help to build up a protective barrier – perfect for your lips. It is also high in Vitamin E, making it a natural anti-aging agent. It is also naturally anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. Check the packaging when purchasing a coconut oil to make sure that there are no additives. Unrefined coconut oil will also retain more of its nutritive properties than other types.
Castor seed oil is a vegetable oil made from castor seeds. It has a smooth, slippery texture and a high amount of natural shine. Castor oil may also have a natural plumping effect by drawing more blood flow to the area that it’s applied to.
Cera Alba beeswax is a purified beeswax that comes from the bees’ honeycomb. It lends a silky texture to this liquid lip gloss recipe, and also helps to provide a protective (and shiny!) barrier on the lips that locks in moisture. For the best product, buy 100% pure cera alba beeswax from a certified organic source. Since this is a product cultivated by bees, its also important to look for ethically-sourced brands! In this lip gloss recipe, I’ve used white beeswax pellet to let the red and pink from the beetroot shine!
Shea butter is made from the African Shea tree. It is an extremely rich and nourishing nut butter that is rich in vitamin E and fatty acids. This provides a rich moisture content to the recipe and helps to form a protective coating on the lips. For the best quality shea butter, check the label to make sure that it is not blended with anything else.

This superb natural dye from intense pink to intense purple consists of concentrated organic beet juice. It makes it possible to color very easily all the aqueous phases and also the semi-solid oily phases such as lip balms when it is added at the end of preparation. I found mine on Aroma zone here. They ship internationally but the website is only in French 🙁
This lip gloss provides a nutritious, hydrating, non-sticky shine and a bright pop of color for the most beautiful lips!
The trick is to use fine beetroot powder and to mix it with castor oil. Otherwise, the beetroot powder will be all lumpy and grainy!
I don’t recommend using beetroot juice as it spoils easily. If, however, you have to use it, you’ll need to add grapefruit seed extract in your recipe as a natural preservative, to make sure your lip balm lasts.
I find Beetroot concentrate has a more intense color than beetroot powder. But please ensure you are also using grapefruit seed extract as well unless you are buying it from Aroma zone and it contains a natural preservative.
The beetroot will give your lips a subtle, soft yet fresh pink tint. Since it’s a lip balm, it won’t offer the pigmentation of a lipstick. If you’re looking for something with a stronger pink, red or Fuschia color, try using carmine, iron oxides, or a vegetable colorant like grenadine.
if you don’t want to buy beetroot juice concentrate you can make your own!
You will need a juicer and following the steps below:
Here are some substitutes you can use in your DIY lip balm instead of beetroot powder:
Rich in Vitamin C, hibiscus helps moisturize and even out the lips. It also has a sweet, zesty aroma that instantly helps lift your mood.
Iron oxides are safe for the lips and give a vibrant pigment to your lips.
Carmine is also safe to use on the lips, and its pigmentation is honestly to die for. It gives an intense red color!

When I made the lip balm with beetroot powder, its separated as in the beetroot powder settled at the bottom
did you try to whip it with a milk frother? Like this one: https://amzn.to/38ZO9eW
works for me!
I love this recipe but I only subbed avocado oil for sunflower oil (using the beet juice concentrate from Aromazone) but mine keeps coming out oily and not dissolved. What should I try?
Thanks in advance!
have you used castor oil and beeswax?
with the beeswax, it should thicken and you should be able to whip it!
Hi,
My beetroot lip balm goes off within a day? Do I need to use something to extend shelf-life?
Thank you,
Lisa
are you using fresh juice? its best to use beetroot powder as it has longer self life. to extend the shell life you can use one of those natural preservatives here:https://www.organic-beauty-recipes.com/top-3-natural-preservatives-diy-beauty/
I live in Canada and ordering from France is a bit on the expensive side. So I have been contemplating making beet reduction myself. Their website mentions acidification with the lemon concentrate to preserve the color. Does that mean that I should juice the beetroot, reduce it and add some citric acid? Do you know how much citric acid (the proportion to the beetroot juice) is needed? Thank you.
I have been looking for a natural red/pink lip pigment for a while. Thank you for the brilliant idea to use beetroot juice reduction.
What is the process when using fresh beetroots to make the juice? I've looked online and seem to find different methods but noticed that you mentioned above that I need to "cook" the juice prior to using it? Had not seen that on other methods so just want to make sure I understand. Thank you! I'm looking forward to making these for my sisters and daughters.
Hi Eve, I simply can not get enough of the DIY's on your page, its amazing. A quick question though, is the shelf life of both lip gloss the same? considering one has water(from beetroot juice).
Would like to know the same!
Amazing results, even though I didn’t use sunflower oil. Thanks a lot!
thanks Girija!
instead of buying the beetroot juice, can i not just cook my own beets and use the beet juice?
you could but you need to juice the fresh beetroot and then cook it to make sure you make a reduction, it needs to be thick, almost like a syrup.
Lip Gloss with Beetroot :
Great texture, makes for shiny and soft lips.
But there is too much beetroot powder in the recipe, makes it a dark color.
Next time, I will put a lot less
