Your oral hygiene products may be some of the most important ones to make yourself as you are likely to ingest at least a portion of the ingredients. You can make my easy homemade mouthwash recipe in a few minutes and enjoy healthy gums naturally!
In this recipe, I’ve used aloe vera juice, myrrh, sweet fennel, and tea tree essential oil which are great to fight against gingivitis.
A commercial mouthwash may contain several dangerous chemicals such as benzoic acid, methylparaben, poloxamer, and others! Some brands also have as much as 27% alcohol content. Alcohol actually destroys the balance of good bacteria in your mouth, and it can discolor and stain your teeth. Chemicals and alcohol in commercial mouthwashes may contribute to dry mouth symptoms. Lack of moisture in your mouth can actually increase the risk of tooth decay, cause gum problems and contribute to bad breath. All of the things we don’t want!
Luckily, you can easily make a safe natural homemade mouthwash that better supports oral hygiene and health – but don’t skip brushing and flossing!
Aloe vera juice comes from within the leaves of the aloe plant. Aloe is a succulent native to North and Central America. The gel has natural healing properties, and hydrates as well as soothes and cools. It’s naturally rich in minerals that help to support tooth health, and it’s saponin and salicylic acid content helps to cleanse. Aloe vera is also naturally high in vitamin B12 and vitamins A, C and E. When you buy aloe vera juice, make sure it is not blended with any other liquids or additives.
Organic Myrrh tincture is from the natural gum of the Myrrh tree. It is commonly used in organic dental recipes because it naturally neutralizes bad bacteria that cause odor. It can also help to soothe gums and protect against receding gums. The tincture is a liquid suspension that mixes well with the other ingredients in this homemade mouthwash recipe.
Sweet fennel essential oil is an essential oil distilled from the seeds of the fennel root vegetable. It is naturally antimicrobial and has a cooling scent and effect on the skin and gums. It’s not quite minty, but its close! Sweet fennel is a great essential oil for oral hygiene because it maintains the natural balance of healthy bacteria in the mouth while preventing bacterial overgrowth.
Tea tree essential oil is a powerful antiseptic oil made from the Australian tea tree. It should be used sparingly so as not to destroy the good bacteria in your mouth – so be sure to use as directed in the recipe! It can help to relieve tooth and gum pain. Its terpenoid content helps it heal soft tissues, and it has been proven to be effective in fighting the bacteria that cause gingivitis.

Thank you for sharing this! I made my first batch a few days ago and am using it every morning and night. I don't like the taste but I've added some peppermint EO and find it very acceptable. And you do get used to it, like (for instance) when you try out a new toothpaste.

I am not fond of the taste of aloe vera juice, but do drink a distilled aloe vera water that does not require refrigeration. Can I substitute that for the juice?

Myrrh is a very traditional breath freshener. There's an old book called Secrets of the Petit Albert, from the 17th century, that has its "secret" for curing bad breath to be sucking on a piece of myrrh before bed at night.
